Duties & Responsibilities

SUMMARY
Reporting to the Head of the WLD, the incumbent coordinates the reporting of Western Languages Division statistics and work on incorporating data and evidence into the Division's collection development activities and practices.  This position also develops and manages specific areas of the WLD's humanities and/or social science collections, and participates in outreach and support for research, teaching, and learning activities.  The incumbent is part of a team dedicated to developing world-class collections and access to information resources in all formats.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  *   Serve as the WLD operational coordinator of collection development and collection management activities including:
     *   Coordinate priorities and tasks with the WLD team members and with colleagues in Information & Technical Services; and consults with library units throughout the Harvard Library and beyond.
     *   Implement workflows and processes for management and overseeing of unit approval plans, both domestic and international, and including monitoring coverage through extensive review and analysis of periodical reports.
     *   Lead cross-department working groups to review approval plan vendor performance from multiple operational perspectives, including collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, and access services.
     *   Initiate continuous review of print and electronic, with the goal of reducing costs and increasing access by shifting to electronic, based on Harvard Library policies.
     *   Use best practices in procurement and negotiations to successfully leverage the collective buying power of the Harvard Library to realize the cost savings in vendor negotiations for print and digital resources.
     *   Coordinate the reporting of Western Languages Division statistics and work on incorporating data and evidence into the Division's collection development activities and practices.
  *   Participate in delineating the strategies and priorities for the Division's mission and vision in order to efficiently support the needs of faculty, students, and academic programs. Participate in the process of the formulation of Harvard-wide policy and development of best practices, in support of the work of the Collection and Content Development Standing Committee, as appropriate.
  *   Participate in collection development and management activities for WLD in specific areas of humanities and/or social science:
     *   Identify and acquire or otherwise ensure access to the humanities and/or social sciences materials, in all formats, in support of scholarship at Harvard.
     *   Deploy a range of actions, including purchase, licensing, partnerships and collaborative collecting with other institutions, selection for retention, and open access, to support a successful model of 21st century information access.
     *   Analyze and evaluate collections in terms of coverage, format, and distribution among Harvard's libraries.
     *   Analyze user requirements. Cultivate contacts with faculty to learn about their areas of interest and to better align acquisitions and identification of information resources with academic priorities.
     *   Maintain close working relationships with representatives of the book trade and the overall community of information providers.
     *   Pursue collaborative collection development opportunities with other Harvard libraries and with external partner institutions.
  *   Pro-actively participate in outreach and research support for faculty and students, in collaboration with other librarians focusing on research, teaching, and learning activities.
  *   Actively participate in Harvard committees, working groups, and meetings; and in regional and national professional activities.

Basic Qualifications


  *   Demonstrated experience in collection assessment and evaluation of research libraries' collections.
  *   A minimum of one year of experience using Excel for managing statistical data and generating reports.
  *   Reading knowledge of at least one Western European language.
  *   MLS, or equivalent, and an advanced degree in the humanities or social sciences.
  *   Experience in vendor negotiations.
  *   Minimum of two years of professional experience/ Demonstrated ability in Collection Development in a research library.
  *   Knowledge of the rapidly changing scholarly communications environment, including contemporary trends in research and learning and open access opportunities.
  *   Excellent IT skills required, including knowledge of basic desktop and Internet applications, proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Access) and Aleph system, and experience with on-line integrated library catalogs.
  *   Familiarity with bibliographic searching in HOLLIS/Aleph, vendor databases, and with the conventions of cataloging and bibliographic description.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  *   Requires lifting and moving materials weighing up to 40 pounds, and pushing heavily loaded book trucks.
  *   Requires regular travel to a location one subway stop/ca. one mile away.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

  *   The work associated with this position is performed in a library office setting.
