The Access & Borrow Department is charged with cultivating and seamlessly
connecting the Miami community to the materials and digital resources that
support academic success and advance discovery.

The Department Head of Access & Borrow fosters a highly collaborative
department, engaging in effective working relationships within the
department; developing and maintaining a dynamic, service-oriented
department; encouraging and supporting effective cooperation and teamwork
across library departments and the university; administering and
supervising circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, stacks maintenance
for four Oxford-campus libraries, electronic resources and serial
management, cataloging and acquisitions.

*Department Head & Associate/Principal Librarian Responsibilities & Duties*

Department Heads provide high-quality, innovative, and user-oriented
services to a diverse body of students and faculty through carrying out the
following duties and responsibilities:

Responsibility for all departmental activities including setting
operational goals and evaluating department operations;

   - Collaboratively, with fellow department heads and assistant/associate
   deans, preparing a long-range vision for the department in support of the
   University Libraries’ and university’s strategic directions;
   - Providing leadership in developing an effective, collaborative,
   positive department environment, including selecting, supervising,
   mentoring, and evaluating staff;
   - Managing change, problem solving, innovating, communicating
   effectively within and across departments;
   - Maintaining and enhancing professional skills through professional
   development and pursuing a career path that contributes to academic
   librarianship through service and scholarship;
   - Cultivating partnerships, promoting the university’s and Libraries’
   commitment to diversity, collaborating with faculty and peers, fostering
   positive relations with faculty, students and staff, and representing the
   University Libraries to the university community;
   - Staying current on emerging trends and issues while collaborating
   regularly with leaders within the division to collectively recommend, plan
   and execute action plans and strategies.

Flexibility and adaptability are key to working in our evolving, fast-paced
environment. Both positions report to an Assistant Dean.

*Required and Desired Qualifications*

*Require*: Masters’ degree or higher in library/information science from an
ALA-accredited institution or non-U.S. equivalent; at least 5 years of
experience working in an academic, research or special library; familiarity
with current and emerging technologies; excellent oral and written
communication skills; demonstrated organizational, analytical, and critical
thinking skills; demonstrated initiative, the ability to manage multiple
projects and a commitment to professional development; demonstrated
evidence of strong leadership, management and mentoring skills;
demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other library units;
demonstrated commitment to quality customer service; a record of
scholarship and professional achievement appropriate for appointment at the
rank of Associate or Principal Librarian with continuing contract.

*Desire*: At least 5 years of experience working in an academic library; at
least 3 years of experience supervising librarians; experience working with
faculty; experience with grant writing; experience working with diverse
groups to reach common goals; experience with systematic reviews and data
management; experience assessing services for effectiveness; demonstrated
service orientation and the essential ability to build and sustain
relationships; demonstrated interest, experience or ability to build
inclusiveness.
