ALCTS webinar: Putting the Link in Linked Data

Part 1 of a 5 part Webinar Series: From MARC to Linked data

Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2016

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.



Description:

Session 1 in the series, “From MARC to BIBFRAME
<http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/MARCBIBFRAME>” will
focus on the concept of the URI/IRI (uniform resource identifier /
internationalized resource identifier) as the core of the linked data /
semantic web operations. This session will focus both on the conceptual
aspect of URI linking and also on the workflow and functional implications
of moving from traditional authority control to URI based authority control.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this session, attendees will understand:

* The importance of moving from text strings to URIs to link entities and
resources.

* The difference between traditional authority control and URI-based entity
management.

* Some implications for workflows in the URI-based cataloging environment.

Who should attend? Technical service librarians and staff and library
administrators

*This is an intermediate course intended for those with a basic
understanding of bibliographic records and linked data.


Presenter:

Nancy Lorimer is Head of the Metadata Department at Stanford University,
where she oversees metadata creation and participates in linked data
projects and planning. A core participant in both the Linked Data for
Production and the Linked Data for Libraries--Labs Mellon-funded grant
projects, Nancy is also a consultant to the PCC Task Group on URIs in MARC.
Nancy holds an MLIS from Western University, and a MMus from the University
of Edinburgh.
