The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Library<https://www.utc.edu/library/> seeks an innovative and dynamic professional for the position of Collections Initiatives Librarian in the Library’s Collection Services Department.



Library Description



In December 2014, UTC opened a 5-story 180,000 square foot library. The <http://www.utc.edu/library/profiles/> library staff<http://www.utc.edu/library/profiles/> comprises 21 librarians and 13 staff members, operates on an annual budget of just over 3 million dollars, and possesses collection holdings of more than 500,000 volumes, over 2,500 active journal subscriptions, 150 databases, and over 28,000 accessible online journals.

The <http://www.utc.edu/library/new-library/> new library<http://www.utc.edu/library/new-library/> provides a large information commons with 175+ public computers, 38 group study rooms, a media studio, 3 library instruction classrooms, a writing center, a cafe and a 24-hour study space. The library delivers a comprehensive range of public services, including proactive outreach, instruction, and reference. UTC Library is well equipped to support the research and scholarship needs of the UTC community.



Collection Services Description



The Collection Services Department comprises the following key functions within the UTC Library: acquisitions and cataloging; electronic resources; document delivery and interlibrary loan; stacks maintenance; course reserves; and special collections (rare books, manuscripts, university archives.) The Department manages an annual collection budget of ~ 1.5 million dollars spent on materials in both print and electronic format. Over the past 3 years, the Collection Services Department has undergone several changes to better align roles and responsibilities within the new library building, ramp up digitization and description efforts in Special Collections, and consolidate roles and responsibilities in order to gain efficiencies and take on new initiatives.  The department is made up of 6 faculty librarians, 3 staff members, and 3.5 FTE student assistants.



Position Summary



Reporting to the Head of Collection Services, the Collections Initiatives Librarian will assist with day to day operations across the department, take the lead in our new scholarly communication initiatives, and lead departmental projects as needed.  As a tenure-track position, the Collection Initiatives Librarians holds responsibilities in three core areas:



As Collections Initiatives Librarian



·         Assist Head of Collection Services in all facets of department life from daily operations to strategic planning including, project management, goal and objective setting, collection development policies, and monitoring trends in acquisitions, electronic resources, and scholarly communications.

·         Works closely with the Head of Collection Services and Director of Special Collections to develop scholarly communication initiatives, including:

o    Educational programs to increase awareness in the UTC community about copyright, open access, data curation, open educational resources, and other scholarly communication issues.

o    Managing UTC’s Affordable Course Materials Initiative, working with faculty to utilize open access or library-licensed electronic resources within their courses instead of traditional costly textbooks.

o    Advising UTC faculty on publishing agreements, retention of right to deposit materials in the campus repository.

·         Manage department, library, and university-wide projects and initiatives in an effective manner utilizing project management standards while adhering to project boundaries and timelines.

·         Develop and implement assessment methodologies to assist in collection development in both print and electronic formats; process improvement in ordering, receiving, processing materials, and interlibrary loan; and the development of new services.

·         Assist with management and acquisition of e-resources throughout their life cycle.

·         Develop and maintain course reserves policies, workflows, and web pages.

·         Supervise or assist with the supervision of student assistants as needed.



As Collection Services Team Member



Specific job duties within the team will vary based on position, but the following responsibilities encompass the broad functional activities of Collection Services team members.

·         Work collaboratively with the members of the Collection Services team to develop and manage collection development projects.

·         Analyze and report on data and trends regarding collection growth, usage, material costs, expenditures, etc. to inform decisions regarding the Library’s collections, budgetary needs, develop collection strategies, and inform stakeholders of the value of collections across all collection service operations.

·         Cooperate with subject librarians and other staff members to assess library collections and services in support of external reviews or accreditations of academic programs and proposals of new programs, majors, minors, and certificates.



As Library and University Citizen



·         Participate in providing reference, liaison, and outreach services to the university community.

·         Participate in library-wide planning and committee work.

·         Participate in university governance, planning and service.

·         Conduct scholarship consistent with a tenure-track appointment.

·         Engage in continuing professional development.




Qualifications



Required



·         A master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or a terminal advanced degree with at least 5 years’ experience in an academic library.

·         Demonstrated experience and effectiveness managing collaborative and multi-faceted projects across organizational boundaries.

·         Demonstrated experience managing, interpreting, and visualizing both quantitative and qualitative data for general reporting and budget decisions.

·         Knowledge of academic publishing and the role of open access platforms in disseminating research.

·         Demonstrated experience managing copyright and other intellectual property issues in the academic environment.

·         Demonstrated experience in the acquisition and management of print, electronic, born-digital or digitized library, archival, or research materials.

·         Demonstrated experience working with a variety of library systems and vendors and the ability to learn new systems and workflows quickly. Preference given to experience with OCLC Worldshare Management Services (WMS) and Digital Commons.

·         Familiarity with metadata formats and standards used in describing materials:  MARC, RDA, KBART, and Dublin Core, and familiarity with data exchange protocols to ingest, export, and share materials or data related to materials: OpenURL, SUSHI, SWORD, and OAI-PMH.

·         Aptitude for thinking creatively and developing products and services, such as publications or training materials relevant to scholarly communications.

·         Ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage time wisely, and make quick effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.

·         The ability to work both independently and collegially, and to collaborate effectively within a culturally diverse academic community.

·         Effective written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, customer-service focus, a passion for the profession, and a deep commitment to the academic community.



Desired



·         Demonstrated experience managing institutional repositories, including issues, policies, service models, and strategies for securing appropriate content.

·         Knowledge of and skills in new forms and tools of digital scholarship and scholarly communication, e.g. Altmetrics, ORCID, social networking sites for academia.

·         Knowledge of funding agencies’ requirements for managing and sharing scholarship and data.

·         Experience seeking out and applying for grant or other outside funding opportunities.

·         Experience providing reference service in a research or academic library.

·         Experience supervising student assistants.

·         Experience working with university schools and units.




Salary



The minimum salary is $44,000, commensurate with experience.



Rank



This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with faculty status and academic rank. Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor.
