ALCTS webinar: Preserving Digital Collections: An Overview

This session is part 3 of a 3-part series, Library Preservation Today,
sponsored
by the ALCTS Preservation & Reformatting Section (PARS)

Date: Wednesday, March 16, 2016

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.

Description: Session 3 of Library Preservation Today will be a primer to
digital library preservation, assuming little or no background in
protecting and ensuring access to both born digital and digitized
collections, including text, images, and AV collections. The presentation
will provide tools to begin extending the useful life of library
collections.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this series, attendees will:

1. Value preservation as a formal library function, and how it reflects and
supports the institutional mission

2. Appreciate the primary role of preventive care, including good storage
conditions, in extending the useful life of collections; and

3. Understand some of the challenges in preserving digital content and what
the implications are for the future of scholarship.

Who should attend? Those who work in smaller to medium sized libraries,
archives and historical societies.

Presenter: Peter Verheyen, Research and Emerging Issues Analyst at Syracuse
University Library comes from a bookbinding and rare book conservation
background. He worked as a conservator in private practice and at Yale and
Cornell University libraries. In 1995 he established the conservation lab
at the Syracuse University Libraries and served as Head of Preservation and
Conservation until 2013. Verheyen was involved in digitization activities
at Syracuse and managed many projects in the Special Collections Research
Center.
