[Eril-l] Fair use webinars for faculty?

Keep an eye on the CopyTalk series from the OITP (Office of Information Technology Policy)(ALA). Very good legal minds contribute to these sessions.
http://www.ala.org/advocacy/pp/pub/copytalk
They maintain an archive<http://www.ala.org/offices/oitp/publications/copytalk> too if you miss the online sessions.

Some university legal counsels are very conservative and want to discourage potential liability; others are a little more courageous. It's a mixed bag. Somewhere between the conservative legal counsels, the CCC (that makes lots of money selling permissions to you), and advice from smart, liberal leaning lawyers outside academe lies the truth. It is very interpretive, but ultimately it's all about risk analysis. Your legal counsel will advise you on the risk stance he is comfortable with for your institution.

There is also a good DVD done by Kevin Smith in 2009. Fair use of movies & music: managing copyright in higher education. Perhaps you could ILL it.
You can probably find some video out there on the web from Kevin Smith, Ken Crews or Peter Jaszi. All excellent speakers on copyright.

Yeah, tread carefully around Disney. What the heck is, copy. Right?

I absolutely agree! Your own legal counsel can give you an idea of their perspective. Copyright law is often interpreted in court and your institution needs to determine what level of risk it wants to operate at. And I also hear to tread carefully around Disney!

The CCC is a copyright collective that benefits from a conservative interpretation of fair use. The more conservative the interpretation of fair use, the more their business model benefits.

I am sure that they do a good job with their webinars, but it is always important to remember the perspective of the folks providing the free webinars.

The Copyright Clearance Center periodically puts out webinars and they are free. They even provided us with a tailored webinar which they later incorporated into their regular offerings. You might try them.

Hello,

Have you or your libraries recently organized a webinar viewing for your faculty on copyright obligations and fair use? Are there webinars out there that you would recommend, preferably with content updated to reflect recent court decisions?

This is for faculty, not library staff...
