Hi Leah,

I was told that CHEMnetBASE would remain a subscription but they plan to move the others to the purchase/EBA models starting with ENGnetBASE.

Hi Eric et al.,

Are libraries seeing this business model change just with ENGnetBASE or is it happening with the various other netBASE collections, too?

Thanks,
Leah

Thank you to everyone who responded to my request for suggestions on how to handle ENGnetBASE's new business models. I received some good suggestions:

* One university cancelled its subscription and will be using its approval plan for new titles and firm orders for highly used backfiles.

* One university said it would counter-propose an EBA model with a dollar commitment based on usage.

* One university said they went with a DDA program with the entire collection exposed and patrons triggering purchases. They're excluding some titles based on age and price.

* One university went with the EBA but set up a deposit account available for 2-3 years.

* One university is going to counter-propose based on budget , looking at perhaps just going with a subset of the collection. Or they may have to cancel.

* I also received a suggestion of counter-proposing an EBA model using the past year's subscription price and adding 3% that would be in line with inflation.

I hope this helps others.

-Eric

Subject: [Eril-l] ENGnetBASE business model

Hello,

We've had a subscription to ENGnetBASE for at least 15 years. We were recently contacted by our rep about our upcoming renewal. She said that their subscription model is no longer sustainable and they would like to move us to one of two new models

1) We can purchase the frontlist of titles each year at a very substantial increase over our current subscription price. If we purchase the frontlist we receive complimentary access to their backlist.

2) We can move to an evidence-based model in which we have to commit to spending only slightly less than the substantial increase in option 1.

We're not happy with either of these options and the rep has suggested that we make a counterproposal. Has anyone else been contacted about this business model change to ENGnetBASE? If so, how did you approach the offer?

Thanks,
Eric
