[Eril-l] use stats - COUNTER 3 to COUNTER 4 experience

Hi Chrysanna,

I have seen several trends… I attribute some EBSCO retrieval number decrease to content being found elsewhere such as our publisher collections.  The patron may start searching in EBSCO, but are often being guided through our SFX link resolver to Sage, Taylor and Francis, Science Direct, Oxford, Wiley, Ovid (for nursing) platforms.

Recently there was a large deletion from EBSCO’s Cinahl database, which I noticed in my SFX revision, but I was glad to see we had coverage of many of these titles in our various publisher collections.  We also watch usage in terms of the curriculum for that year per semester and see how that affects things or what happens when we add new research and course guides.

Ebooks are getting more use and being assigned by faculty as well, which might mean less time being spent in the aggregator databases than when we did not have ebook platforms usage to measure.  Sometimes you have to look at what might have increased use when you see something decrease.

I’ve definitely noticed a significant drop in usage statistics for our EBSCO databases but I haven’t thought to attribute this to the change in COUNTER versions. EBSCO Support looked into it and said that everything looks fine on their end. So perhaps the change in COUNTER versions is affecting the stats…
