We also use ebrary DASH. We find it a very easy solution that meets our needs well, and supports use only by authenticated users.

If you have ebrary, they allow you to upload PDF's to your institution-restricted ebrary database.
It works wonderfully for the situation you describe, and is called DASH<http://www.ebrary.com/corp/dash.jsp>.
