I have experience with onboarding for this role and aside from (hopefully) having extensive, and updated local documentation and procedures to go over, here are some general pieces of advice:

If this is truly an entry-level person or role, I think it’s very important to emphasize that learning how to do ERM is a long process; I tell people it takes at least a year and maybe two before a new person will start to feel like they have the
hang of it. Setting expectations is so important.

Meet regularly with this person, preferably each week or every other week, for at least a year. Having a dedicated space/time to be a resource to the new person is so important, also.

Expect things to change, sometimes rapidly, and communicate that.

Ensure this person is fully plugged in to the existing networks of information sharing and exchange with fellow ERM librarians, and encourage them to actively seek help from those networks as needed. This includes local/regional, not just national
networks. E.g. I’m thinking of CARLI, the consortium we’re both part of.

Be clear about priorities and/or be ready to help them learn to set priorities. There is often a crazy amount of stuff ERM librarians are doing every day and it can be overwhelming.

Strongly encourage their having a view of the library org as a whole and how their work touches on just about every other area. Encourage building mutual relationships with other areas/functions. Help them to see where they have clear ownership
of x and where they have shared responsibility for y.

Support their ability to attend professional events — so important!

Don’t forget about the NASIG Core Competencies for E-Resources Librarians — https://www.nasig.org/Competencies-Eresources — use them as aspirational things rather than must-do.
The latter can be overwhelming, superhuman.

Dear colleagues,

I'm working on an onboarding schedule for an incoming e-resources and systems librarian and would love to hear any ideas or advice from all of you about things you wish you would have learned when you started your current e-resources/systems role. So far, I
have a draft schedule of meetings with colleagues within the library as well as key people outside the library, as well as a meeting with our former e-resources/systems administrator. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
