<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif">As higher education costs continue to rise, Open Educational Resources (OERs) are evolving as an effective solution to those rising costs. While the effectiveness of
using OERs to reduce direct costs to students is obvious, implementation requires substantial work for teaching faculty and librarians. The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) consortium offers course development grants to all consortial libraries for teaching
faculty interested in implementing OERs in their courses. In turn, the course development grants break down a barrier to implementation and provide an incentive for teaching faculty to adopt and create OERs.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif">Anne Osterman, VIVA Director at George Mason University Libraries, and Jenise Overmier, Research and Instruction Librarian at Marymount University Library, will discuss
VIVA’s Open and affordable initiatives, Marymount University Library’s experience with a VIVA course development grant, and the cost of higher education’s impact on collection development practices in general.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
