the OPAC holdings, so that environment is not too much of a shock. There was some grumbling, but most known-item searches show up as expected in the new interface. We have had to make some adjustments to assure that this is the case, but by and large, the
new system has fared pretty well. We did a formal (but unpublished) usability study this past spring and there was no real pining for the old system from faculty. The few students who remember the old system expressed relief that it has passed on.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:#1F497D">Much of the positivity about the new system is not so much about the searching/browsing per se, but rather about the ancillary functions, saving records, exporting
them, improved off-campus access, device responsiveness, and so forth. These aspects of the overall user experience count too.

they want to be able to find a known book or film quickly, rather than getting a million results as if you were searching Google.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">In looking at DU’s installation of Alma/Primo, it seems like you can find a known item fairly quickly, but the annoyance is seeing all the other results, when you would have
gotten that one known hit in the OPAC. It looks like DU scoped “Catalog” to be the items you would find in a traditional OAPC, but you can’t easily do a title search from their general search.

up going the Alma/Primo route. It looks to me like if you go with Sierra as an ILS, you can still have a Millennium-esque OPAC while opting for Encore or another discovery layer).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

use a browse). Honestly, getting rid of the “looking in two places to find your stuff” has been one of the most beneficial aspects of the migration for the vast majority of our patrons.
