I love them both, and if neither one has a specific film, sometimes I can find it on Alexander Street, which we also have. Even though Kanopy isn’t mediated, I haven’t seen an outrageous amount of use. I agree with Karen Jensen’s comment about wanting to
encourage use rather than restrict it, and we’ve already been cutting back on our DVD purchases to some extent because the faculty are requesting streaming more and more often.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I find it interesting that the discussion is focused on how to reduce patron use of a resource, rather than increase it. I get it - we don't have funds for the pay-per-use model indefinitely, but at my library, where use of just about all
resources is significantly down, having a sudden increase sounds like a "good problem" to have. Rather than finding ways to obstruct patron use, maybe the better approach would be to find a way to accommodate it. Cut something else? perhaps something sacrosanct
that we librarians don't want to let go of, but that our patrons no longer care about - if such a thing still exists at your library, maybe not. Or use the demand as proof that your library needs additional support? Or renegotiate with the vendor? At the
very least, getting the vendor to work with you to set appropriate use parameters. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I also think "entertainment" use of library resources is worth thinking about in depth. I think of my library's mission broadly; we are there not only to support academics, but to help provide the entire higher ed experience for students.
So if a student club is watching a film, the library supporting that use seems like good policy. In provision of that film, we enrich the education students are getting outside of classes, which is a critical part of learning. We have purchased films for outdoor
rec, environmental student groups, and LGBT groups, all outside of faculty/class demands. I would defend all of those as providing an essential library service.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Portland State University Library had a three year PDA plan for all of Kanopy's content. Between year 1 and year 2, we saw an increase in usage that we felt was acceptable about 15%-20% but then between year 2 and 3, our usage quadrupled
even after we removed records from the catalog and blocked a handful of providers that we had available on other platforms. We have since canceled the PDA program entirely & now are only using the mediated access. We're waiting to see how this plays out with
faculty as we ended access at the close of Spring term & Fall term will not start until towards the end of September. So far, there has been dissatisfaction noted by faculty in the College of Film and we're working with them to come to an offering that works
best.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">What we did learn close to shutting off the PDA is that some folks on campus were using Kanopy as a personal entertainment service and not necessarily in classroom use (online or face-to-face). We had anecdotal evidence of that form of
usage presented from various discussions on campus. Then, we also found a local student group facebook page where an advertisement for Kanopy services was posted. It appears that this promotion was not posted by the student group members so it's beneficial
to be a bit wary of the marketing targets being used in social media.<o:p></o:p></p>

instead of quarterly (which it looks like were in 2017) and our totals for the monthly invoices are equaling the quarterly ones from last year. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed anything similar?
