Hi Chris,

You might consult with your subscription agent and see if they can
provide you with a list of publishers that use, or might use,
Carnegie class. We did this with both EBSCO and the SCELC
consortium when it became apparent that our increased FTE might
move us up a tier and we wanted to be prepared for a possible
budget impact. We determined that there would be a very small
impact as we passed 20,000 FTE and a small-to-modest impact as we
hit 25,000.

In my experience, FTE is the most common way to determine pricing
tier, but there are definitely some publishers out there that care
whether you're "Masters-L" or "Research Intensive" so it's a good
idea to be thinking about it. Be aware, too, of the price impact
it can have on your smaller, non-core programs--sometimes you can
appeal to the publisher or society and they'll put you back in the
lower tier if it's a key resource for a tiny department.

Finally, you can also Google for "journal institutional
subscription Carnegie" and several publishers show up at the top
of the list. It's not the neatest way to go about it, but it will
give you some places to start looking.
