Subject: Re: [Eril-l] Wall Street Journal Site License Questions

Hi - Could someone send me your WSJ sales rep info (name and email)? Especially if you are in California or a western state. We had a WSJ site license several years ago, and it was highly used (paid for by our College of Business), then they canceled the subscription a couple of years ago at a time the library was unable to pick up the high cost. Last year, our budget situation improved, and we wanted to restart the site license, but could not get anyone from WSJ to respond to our inquiries. Our sales rep must have left, and using the generic institutional sales contact info on the website (which we tried several times over a 3-month period) never got us a response.

Thanks!

Hi Dana,

Our libraries have access to the WSJ through ProQuest, and directly through WSJ.
I am assuming undergraduate students use the ProQuest version, and faculty & staff use the WSJ version.

Here is the information from our LibGuide:

Wall Street Journal
The University of Rochester has an Institutional subscription to the Wall Street Journal for current active faculty, staff, and students.
For Initial login: go to the Wall Street Journal UR Partner Link<http://partner.wsj.com/partner/universityofrochester> and log in with your UR(MC) AD credentials.

Create a Wall Street Journal personal account using your University of Rochester email address.

With a personal Wall Street Journal account, users can go directly to the Wall Street Journal and sign-in to view full-text and download the WSJ app.

Users must reactivate/renew their Wall Street Journal account annually. Faculty and staff will receive an email notification seven days prior to their refresh.
By clicking “Refresh Membership” or the “Click Here” prompt in the email, users will be directed to refresh their access for another year.

If you did not receive the email notification, you can reactivate/renew your account by going to Wall Street Journal UR Partner Link and authenticating through University of Rochester.
Access will be renewed for another year.

Partner link looks like: partner.wsj.com/partner/universityofrochester<http://partner.wsj.com/partner/universityofrochester>
SSO- Shibboleth

Thanks,
Jen McCarthy

We previously had SSO set up for WSJ through our campus system, Okta, but when the university moved to Microsoft in fall 2024 we took that opportunity to move it to OpenAthens like the rest of our e-resources, with a custom SAML resource.

It requires use of a library-specific link initially, but from there I believe that individual accounts using institutional e-mail addresses are automatically associated to the OpenAthens account. That association depends on OpenAthens releasing the relevant attribute to allow that match, which Dow Jones should be able to help with at set up. So users can access without setting up their own individual account (they just need to remember to use the library's link, so they are routed through OpenAthens), OR they can use their own individual account and access as normal.

I'll also just note that session cookies seem to expire after one week, so users will need to sign in again (either through OpenAthens or individually) each week.

It's interesting that we seem to be in the opposite situation as Kyle - the NYT told us they weren't able to connect via SSO. Maybe something for us to follow up on...

We just set up WSJ academic access at the beginning of Spring semester after many years of requests from faculty. We do have Proquest Access too but faculty really wanted the direct interface, especially for current information. We will be evaluating at the one year mark to see if it is something we can sustain but have had great feedback. They don't do counter stats but do have an admin page that gives some basic numbers including Number of Activated Users, Number of Accesses, and Number of Page Views. Our rep indicated she may be able to provide some addition statistics upon request.

Coverage: Our coverage goes back to 1998.

As per SSO: We set up with through Shibboleth, I believe. Our campus Systems Administrator worked directly with the tech WSJ folks to get everything set up. It does not allow for pass through access; students and faculty are required to set up individual accounts in order to get access. The plus of this was that faculty and students who already pay for a subscription could ask for the two accounts to be merged, and then supposedly would get a refund for part of their subscription fee.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Eril-l] Wall Street Journal Site License Questions

Looking for more information for those who have a WSJ site license for their campuses.

We have had ProQuest's Wall Street Journal online for many years, and despite faculty saying they want, need, and have students use it, use has dropped to the point where I told our business school that they had to split the cost to continue the subscription. I know that the current ProQuest interface is probably not the best for use and inquired about site licensing from the WSJ directly. Their quote is on par with what we're paying now and I believe the site license would increase use greatly.

However, I'm finding somewhat conflicting information about site license coverage and implementation based on what I see from other universities' subscriptions. Here are my questions:

-If you have the Campus-Wide Access site license what is the date coverage? The WSJ rep said archival coverage is back to 1998, but I see other institutions list a 4 year cut off.

-WSJ says they are SSO compatible, and as we have Open Athens integrated with Azure, can do that easily. However, do users still have to make a separate account with WSJ or can the SSO be carried through to accomplish that as well?

Are there any other site license issues/complexities we should be aware of? We are not in a financial position to do both ProQuest and a site license; it has to be one or the other.

Thanks in advance,

Dana
