[Eril-l] Authentication

All,

Replying to the last point in Candace’s email below, about the Statista OverDriveSite directive for EZProxy. (We use locally hosted EZProxy for almost everything & have no desire to change that.)

If you’re not on the EZP listserv, where the conversation has been thick & fast about it, here’s what you have to do to get Statista working through EZProxy.

  * Despite what the instructions say, the “domain” you give Statista should be the subdomain of your EZProxy server. In my case, that’s silk.library.umass.edu
  * Then, that subdomain needs to also be what’s used in your OverDriveSite directive line. It does not seem to matter where in the config file you place the line; it will not interfere with the line that is actually for OverDrive, if you have that. My directive line looks like OverDriveSite -URL=https://www.statista.com/sso -Secret=SecretCodeGoesHere= -ILSName=silk.library.umass.edu statista
     * If you already sent them your domain & they sent you back the directive with the secret code, you’ll need to ask them to generate a new one when you correct the domain they have for you.
     * This took a couple days for me (I think their IT people are a little overwhelmed), so request they restore IP auth for you while you wait if they don’t do so themselves.
  * You need to update your access link to Statista. For us, it became https://silk.library.umass.edu/OverDrive/statista. The “statista” on the end matches the last bit of the directive line.
  * This DOES NOT allow for deep linking. Someone else on the EZP list suggested there’s some more fancy footwork you can do with the directive to make deep linking work, but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet.

Hope this helps someone & feel free to reach out with questions.

Sorry about the draft message sent a short while ago. This is how I meant to reply:

Hi,

We’ve been using EZproxy for about 25 years. We are currently using the OCLC hosted product, though we used to run EZproxy locally until about 13 years ago. We’ve been a WMS library for the last 11 years, and prior to that we were an Innovative Interfaces library for 25 years.

Our Electronic Resources and Metadata Librarian, Daniel Fitzroy, and I did deep dive into available authentication methods a little over four years ago. We’ve been monitoring the topic closely since. We have no plans to move away from Hosted EZproxy; we are expert level users and make updates to the config file ourselves. We also recently started a subscription to the Hosted EZproxy Analytics product.

I am a member of our intercollegiate Identity and Access Management Information Technology Operation Committee. In the Library we take advantage of EZproxy’s Groups directive to limit access to certain resources. We’re hoping to release more authentication attributes from our new Entra central tenant so that we may more finely identify usage by user type. This would also allow us to utilize the Groups directive to better adhere to our license agreements concerning alumni access.

We’re looking to eventually turn off IP access with as many vendors as possible, making only our proxy server IP recognizable. We need to push as much use as possible through our proxy server. We are funded by the 7 Claremont Colleges using a formula that somewhat considers use of resources per college. COUNTER data can’t record usage that finely, but releasing the correct authentication attributes and leveraging the Groups directive will get us very close to just what we need.

Regarding Statista . . . there is still a method for using EZproxy for authentication with Statista. Even though Statista is moving away from IP authentication, a special directive, like the one used for OverDrive, can still grant access through EZproxy. Dan worked directly with Statista to help get this set up.

HI,

We use OCLC's EZProxy Hosted and it is 100% better than what we were using (WAM from Innovative Interfaces).

They have been very helpful troubleshooting things when we have had issues and are quick to add new databases.

The only thing is apparently some vendors are moving away from ip authentication, so far that hasn't happened for any of ours, Statista is one product that I've heard of that no longer works with EProxy.
