Knowledge Unlatched Announces 2025 Pledging for Libraries
Knowledge Unlatched (KU), the international initiative for Open Access (OA), announced the 2025 pledging round for libraries<https://arevie.ws/KU2025_Pledge> today. This year marks an important new chapter for Knowledge Unlatched (KU). After more than a decade of pioneering collective open access models, KU has found a new nonprofit home with Annual Reviews.
The collective aim of the KU process is to provide open access to scholarly content, including books and journals, across subjects in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and STEM fields. In 2025, further expansion progressed into the arts, media and cultural studies, international and area studies, and business and management. KU also now delivers library services to the community through its collaboration with Sylla.
Libraries around the world continue to come together through KU to make thousands of books and journals openly available, generating tens of millions of content interactions from readers each year. This is proof of what can be accomplished through partnership and sustained commitment. “With a reenergized KU team, we are ready to continue expanding these initiatives and deepening their impact.,” says Richard Gallagher, President and Editor in Chief of Annual Reviews. “Together with the ongoing partnership of libraries and publishers, we will continue building a strong, sustainable open access future that benefits the global research community for years to come.”
In 2025, the rich programs available for pledging include: multiple subject-specific partner collections, three open access platforms, and additional Subscribe to Open journal offerings. KU’s flagship offering, KU Select Books Collection, is a multi-publisher, multi-disciplinary collection and has been expanded to include 200 titles. The full collection is organized into eight themed subcollections of 25 titles each, addressing urgent societal, environmental, and political issues. As in previous years, the final title selection for KU Select was voted on by the KU Librarian Selection Committee.
New partners include Boydell & Brewer, Intellect Books, IntechOpen, Emerald Publishing, the University of Michigan Press, and Sylla, among others. Established partners like CRC Press, HAU Books, Routledge, and University of California Press | Luminos continue to participate and support Open Access.
Libraries interested in supporting this year’s Open Access offerings can pledge their support until January 31, 2026.
