Dear colleagues,
As we mark 30 years working with the library community to preserve and increase access to scholarly materials, Kevin Guthrie, president of ITHAKA and founding president of JSTOR, announced<https://about.jstor.org/blog/preserving-the-past-building-the-future-together-introducing-jstor-digital-stewardship-services/> today a new digital collection stewardship solution designed to help libraries and archives describe, preserve, manage, and share their unique collections at scale--reducing backlogs and increasing discovery.
JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services<https://about.jstor.org/get-jstor/digital-stewardship/> integrates digital asset management, long-term preservation (powered by Portico<http://www.portico.org/>), increased discovery through JSTOR, and a first-of-its-kind AI-assisted metadata generation tool that accelerates collection processing while maintaining expert oversight.
This new offering is the result of deep collaboration with our global community of librarians, archivists, and others entrusted with the care of unique and culturally significant collections. It brings together everything we've learned and built together over the past three decades-and introduces a set of tools designed to meet one of today's most pressing challenges: how to process and make discoverable the vast and growing collections that remain hidden from view.
"Libraries and archives face significant challenges in stewarding existing and ever-growing digital collections," said Rebecca Seger, vice president of institutional participation and strategic partnerships. "Our new service improves library workflows, access, discovery and preservation of these materials, addresses pain points, and provides an unprecedented opportunity for libraries to accelerate collection processing."
Starting today, libraries can join the JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services Charter Program<https://about.jstor.org/get-jstor/digital-stewardship/charter-program/>-a two-year fee-based initiative that invites institutions to join JSTOR in shaping the future of AI-assisted digital stewardship. Charter participants will gain early access to the platform, contribute feedback, and play a leading role in ensuring AI serves the values and needs of the profession.
We invite you to learn more at the links above and by visiting with us at upcoming library events: ACRL (booth #925), and UKSG (booth #s 46+47).
Best,
Heidi
