Hold it Together!: MARC Format for Holdings Data in Practice and Transition
May 20-21, 2025
Moderated by Michelle Colquitt, Emily Fidelman and Lisa Romano
Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone!
Registration information is at the end of the message.
Each day, discussion begins and ends at:
Pacific: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Mountain: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Central: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Eastern: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
MARC format for holdings data (MFHD) evolved primarily to express print,
serial holdings in catalogs on relational database platforms. As catalog
databases become cloud-based and as MARC transitions to BIBFRAME, the MFHD
standard has not always been incorporated into Library Management System
(LMS) functionality, and it has been modelled differently across LMS
infrastructures. Local practices have diverged and may be less
interoperable, while MFHD records remain an essential institutional filter
on larger pools of linked, web-based metadata. This eForum will facilitate
discussion of local MFHD practices in an effort to identify patterns and
solutions and begin to surface best practices, which the Interest Group
hopes to transmit to users of the MARC holdings standard across
institutions and LMS platforms in future activities.
Learning Outcomes:
-
Participants will network with a community of practitioners to answer
specific questions about the MARC format for holdings data (MFHD) standard
and its application across Library Management Systems (LMSs)
-
Participants will gain an understanding of how MFHD is searched and
displayed in different LMS's in order to inform decisions about migrations,
configurations, and cataloging or resource sharing workflows
-
Participants may consider how the differences in modeling across Library
Management Systems affect interoperability and integration of the LMS with
other software and systems
-
Discussion will inform the Continuing Resources Holdings Information
Interest Group's future efforts to assemble documented best practices for
MFHD in a variety of LMSss
Who Should Attend:
Technical Services or Resource Sharing professionals and paraprofessionals
in Academic, Public, or Special Libraries who use, enter, or configure
holdings records in MARC or other formats. Any experience level is welcome!

What Is an e-Forum?
A Core e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of
interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The
e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email
address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate
with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two
to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.
How to Register
You must register your email address to subscribe to or access an
electronic discussion list on ALA's Mailing List Service. Once you have
registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you
choose to leave the list. Find instructions for subscribing and
unsubscribing online. (
