I am sending this request to a couple of email lists so I apologize in
advance for any duplication.
Every year at this time when we are renewing or subscribing or negotiating
new ejournal packages, I find that our journal Knowledgebase is a mess of
old and new title lists for our vendors and publishers. I attempt to update
to the most recent title list (and correct holdings) especially as we
change contracts. But I admit that I do not check every title or even every
package. And, I do not check past entitlements because I do not have time.
Unfortunately, this is just not sustainable any longer.
I have had a complete Knowledgebase cleanup project on my to do list for
years. I admit that rebuilding the Knowledgebase makes me anxious. I am
looking for advice from other institutions who have completely rebuilt
their Knowledgebase or even moved to a different one for ejournal packages.
Here a few questions I hope you can answer:
1. Did you change to a different Knowledgebase or rebuild your current
Knowledgebase? If so, what time of year did you make the change?
2. Do you have more than one Knowledgebase? That is, one for aggregators
(e.g. ProQuest Central or Academic Search Premier) and a separate one for
ejournal packages?
3. Do you load KBART files from the journal publishers into your
Knowledgebase annually?
4. If you have 2 Knowledgebases, how do you manage open URL linking
resolvers?
5. If you did any of the above, what worked and what did not work?
6. Just out of curiosity, do you maintain journal package title lists in
your ILS or LSP (via MARC records)? If yes, what are the advantages? (I
assume you also maintain a Knowledgebase.)
Any advice would be welcome. Feel free to contact me off list.
