In terms of vendor outreach and definitions, I definitely agree with Ilda.  I’ve emailed reps and general customer support people for stat definitions and it’s often worked.  If the vendor has a proprietary method of counting usage, they ought to be able to share a glossary.  (Or your act of outreach may spur them to create one!)

You may find that some subset of the non-COUNTER vendors are relying on Google Analytics or a variant.  In this case, knowing a bit about Google Analytics can be useful for interpretation.
