Best of Core Forum: BIPOC Women Leadership in Academic Libraries

Date: Wednesday, February 7, 2024

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: This panel presentation is composed of Black, Indigenous, and
People of Colour (BIPOC) women leaders, working in middle management in
academic libraries in North America. Each panelist will share their pathway
to leadership and shed light on their challenges, solutions, and strategies
in their individual journeys, and the skills they developed along the way.
The panelists hope that by sharing their experiences, they may encourage
peers with similar backgrounds to consider leadership roles

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to:

   -

   Learn practical strategies for building trust in teams
   -

   Understand the importance of emotional intelligence in library leaders
   -

   Explore gendered expectations of leaders and how they manifest in female
   dominated professions like librarianship

Who should attend?

The presentation is open to all audiences, especially those working in
leadership and management; and those with an interest in equity issues.

Presenters:

Mai Lu is the Head, Public Services and Outreach at the University of
Toronto Mississauga Library. Prior to this, she was the Access and
Inclusion Librarian at the University of Toronto Libraries and was an
2022-2023 ARL LCDP Fellow. Mai holds a Master of Information Studies from
the University of Toronto and a Master of Public Policy, Administration and
Law from York University.

Xiying Mi is the Head of Resource Description at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. She is passionate about data, metadata, linked
data, and leadership skills.

Afra Bolefski is an Associate Librarian at the University of Manitoba
Libraries and leads a team of librarians in six faculties in her role as
Head, Social Sciences Division. She is a 2022-2023 Association of Research
Libraries' LCDP fellow and holds an MLIS from Western University.
