IFRT Reads: Andrea Jamison
Date: Tuesday, February 27, 2024
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.
Description:
The Intellectual Freedom Round Table is restarting our IFRT Reads, a
virtual book club focused on topics related to intellectual freedom. For
our first two events in the series, we will focus on a chapter from Andrea
Jamison's book Decentering Whiteness in Libraries: A Framework for
Inclusive Collection Management Practices. We'll be reading chapter 2:
Understanding the Library Bill of Rights and its Significance to Diversity
in Collection Development. We will have an initial discussion of the
chapter in the first session in January to generate questions for the
author, who will join us for this second session in February hosted in
collaboration with Core.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to:
-
Apply the principles of intellectual freedom to the practice of
collection development with a diversity lens.
Who should attend?
Anyone interested in the intersection between intellectual freedom and
diversity as it pertains to collection development.
Presenters:
Dr. Martin Garnar is the director of the Amherst College Library and the
editor of the 10th edition of the Intellectual Freedom Manual. His
professional activities and speaking schedule reflect a profound inability
to say no. A native New Yorker, Martin lives in western Massachusetts with
his husband Mark and their impossibly cute miniature dachshunds.
