Chinese Language Metadata Librarian
CDL Shared Cataloging Program
Metadata Services Program, UC San Diego Library
The University of California San Diego Library seeks motivated, creative and collaborative applicants to join the Library as the Chinese Language Metadata Librarian for the CDL Shared Cataloging Program (SCP), a California Digital Library (CDL) Unit based in the Metadata Services Program at UC San Diego. This position will provide metadata expertise and access for CDL licensed and select open access electronic collections in Chinese language focusing on disciplines in East Asian Studies.
Responsibilities of the Position
Under the direction of the Head of the Shared Cataloging Program and based in the Metadata Services Program (MS) at the UC San Diego Library, the Chinese Language Metadata Librarian is responsible for providing access to CDL-managed Chinese language electronic resources across the ten UC campuses. Additionally, the librarian plays an integral role in the CDL Electronic Resource Team (ERT), contributing to the development of strategies and best practices for the effective and efficient management of electronic collections.
* Catalogs and has primary responsibility for providing access to CDL-managed Chinese language electronic resources, including but not limited to batch processing of eBooks, eJournals, databases, datasets, streaming audio and video, performing manual original and copy cataloging as needed.
* Proposes and sets priorities in consultation with the UC East Asian Studies Common Knowledge Group (UC EAS CKG) and the CDL Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC). Serves as a liaison to UC EAS CKG to communicate and/or discuss with UC stakeholders on cataloging priorities and/or any cataloging issues/decisions.
* Applies a strong understanding of the UC library system (Alma) collaborative network structure to be able to evaluate/determine the effectiveness and efficiency of cataloging tasks to be performed.
* Applies advanced batch processing techniques and tools to develop and implement effective metadata strategies for extracting, manipulating, transforming, and/or loading large scale data for bibliographic record creation and maintenance, including extended and creative uses of metadata and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). Documents and updates processing procedures for each electronic collection.
* Collaborates with the CDL Electronic Resource Team and SCP catalogers on managing/maintaining CDL data (bib records, portfolios, collection level inventories, etc.).
* Recruits, trains, and supervises student assistants and prepares guidelines for student tasks.
* Provides intellectual leadership and contributes nationally and internationally to the development of emerging cataloging standards and maintains currency with issues in bibliographic and authority control, information organization, and metadata encoding standards.
* Serves on Library-wide, Campus-wide, and UC System-wide committees.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
* MLS/MLIS or equivalent advanced degree. Other appropriate degree and equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services may be substituted.
* Proficiency in Chinese language, including simplified and traditional scripts, and pinyin system. Demonstrated working knowledge of ALA-LC Romanization for Chinese.
* Demonstrated working knowledge of e-book and e-serial collection packages, access, terminology, technology, and metadata as well as library data transformation techniques and software tools sufficient to provide general oversight and coordination of operations, workflows, and special projects.
* Demonstrated experience with original, copy, and batch cataloging of bibliographic records of electronic collections using Resource Description & Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress (LC) Classification, and MARC-21 format and familiarity working with non-MARC metadata formats.
* Demonstrated experience successfully managing students and providing collaborative and inclusive team efforts with peers and direct reports.
* Evidence of contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education and libraries and demonstrated proficiency working in a collaborative, dynamic and culturally diverse environment.
Preferred qualifications
* Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the Alma library services platform collaborative network structure in order to engage in strategic analysis, planning, and decision-making related to the effective and efficient management of batch loading, import profiles, deletions, and global editing of bibliographic records within the Alma Network Zone (NZ).
* Demonstrated experience working in large library organizations or consortia.
