From eril-l at lists.eril-l.org Thu Aug 1 10:45:17 2024 From: eril-l at lists.eril-l.org (Electronic Resources in Libraries discussion list) Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2024 13:45:17 -0400 Subject: [Eril-l] Register now for NISO Plus Global/Online! Early bird deadline is August 9 Message-ID: **Apologies for cross posting** The early bird registration deadline for our 2024 NISO Plus Global/Online conference (September 17?18) is just over one week away! Sign up by Friday, August 9 , for the best rates to this interactive virtual meeting focused on bringing people together and inspiring collaboration in the information community. Here are just a few reasons to attend NISO Plus Global/Online: - Our program tackles the ?big issues? and challenges in scholarly communications: Topics we?ll address include AI and emerging technologies, open research (including open access and open data), PIDs and metadata, research integrity, and accessibility. As always, we?ve also reserved time for updates on NISO standards projects as well as an introduction to the standards process (new for 2024!). - You?ll hear from a wide range of voices and perspectives: Participants who attended our last NISO Plus virtual event praised the meeting for the ?variety of people attending? and ?the breadth of topics and global perspectives.? Speakers at NISO Plus Global/Online represent libraries, publishers, service and scholarly infrastructure providers, government agencies, and more. The virtual format also allows for greater participation from countries outside North America, including The Netherlands, Brazil, Australia, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates, to name just a few. - You?ll brainstorm community-driven solutions with colleagues from across the information community: Standards start with conversations, including those we host at NISO Plus events! (In fact, our recently published CREC Recommended Practice emerged from a conversation that took place at NISO Plus 2021.) Each interactive session includes a presentation followed by a group discussion focused on identifying potential solutions to the challenges and issues introduced by the speakers. Thanks to our generous sponsors ?Cadmore Media , figshare , Bowker , EBSCO , Silverchair , Access Innovations , CHORUS , and the Modern Language Association ?registration rates for the conference are affordable for all in the community. Tickets start at just $49 for students, attendees who are unemployed, retirees, and those residing in low- and middle-income countries (as defined by the World Bank ). There are also discounts for groups of five or more. We hope you?ll take part in the conversation and join us in September for this special event. Check our program for the latest on sessions and speakers, and remember, register by August 9 to take advantage of early bird rates! Often these articles are not yet assigned to a specific issue of a journal and are located in a section of the journal's website that is separate from the rest of their published content. As an example, most recently the problem occurred with an article in an "in progress" issue of Neurology, in which the article appears on the publisher's site but not on the Ovid platform (my institution has subscription access to current journal content via both platforms and I've contacted the vendor to report the problem). Has anyone come up with a workaround for this problem? FWIW, we currently use EBSCO's Full Text Finder in tandem with LibKey Link as our link resolver, though we are migrating to the Alma/Primo suite next year. Path to Open is a multi-year pilot program designed to increase access to diverse ideas and research through the publication of 1,000 academic books, each of which will become open access three years after initial release. HBCUs and TCUs are invited to join the Path to Open pilot immediately at no cost to them, gaining access to Path to Open books as they are published along with MARC records and supporting materials to help their communities use and engage this scholarship. Path to Open fees for HBCUs and TCUs are being covered for the full pilot period (2024-2026) through grant funds provided to the University of North Carolina Press by the Mellon Foundation to incentivize and support participation in Path to Open by historically marginalized communities including authors, libraries, and readers. "HBCUs and TCUs provide critical access to postsecondary education for Black and Indigenous students, and the promise of upward mobility for the vast majority of their students who are eligible for federal Pell grants," said Rebecca Seger, Vice President, Institutional Participation and Strategic Partnerships. "Despite their critical role in the educational ecosystem, they are consistently challenged to support their students and academic missions with far fewer resources than their peers. We hope this opportunity to join Path to Open enriches the library resources available to their students and faculty today and brings their participation and unique perspectives to our community-wide collaboration as we work to build a sustainable open access model that will bring equitable access to scholarship for all communities." In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Our proxy access is working. Interestingly, about a month ago, we received a communication from Emerald about a ?health check.? It read in part: ?As the registered Account Administrator for your Emerald account, we invite you to conduct an Institutional Health-check to ensure that your current authentication methods are up to date via the Account Management Portal (AMP). . . . Please make sure that your IPs are listed correctly, and that any proxy IPs are appropriately marked. ? When I logged in, I noticed that our IP range was listed correctly, but labelled ?Not proxy.? I reached out to them and provided the IP address of our EZproxy server, which is included in our IP range. They added a second line to the list, which is labelled ?Proxy.? I wonder if the outages people are seeing is related somehow. Linda Linda J. Message-ID: **Apologies for cross posting** The early bird registration deadline for our 2024 NISO Plus Global/Online conference (September 17?18) is almost here! Sign up by end of day Friday, August 9 (EDT) , for the best rates to this interactive virtual meeting focused on bringing people together and inspiring collaboration in the information community. Description: In this webinar, participants will learn about a collaborative partnership between an academic library and offices within Student Affairs and campus IT to identify and fund long-term (full academic year) laptops to students most in need of this critical technology. Presenters will provide a case study of how a small pilot program quickly gained popularity and became a paramount service in meeting the needs of at-risk students while building meaningful cross-institutional relationships. Presenters will demonstrate how to develop campus partnerships to implement long-term technology lending programs and meet the technology needs of at-risk students to promote their overall success in an equitable and scalable manner. Attendees will gain insight (including powerful impact data) on how to make the case for similar programs at their higher education institutions, and they will take away an understanding of how to operationalize such a service, leveraging lessons learned from pitfalls experienced in the pilot program. Learning outcomes: At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to: - Understand the need for such a program at their institutions. - Identify potential academic partners at their institutions and make the case for the need and achievability of this program. - Operationalize the program on a scalable and equitable level. - Leverage data to demonstrate value and grow their programs. Who should attend? Academic, Community College, and School library Deans and Directors; Heads of Public Services units; Outreach/Student Success Librarians; IT Librarians and Professionals Presenter: Andrew See has spent his entire career focusing on creating exceptional experiences for end-users in every aspect of systems and services an academic library can provide. Comprised of over 2 million images, videos, panoramas, and audio files contributed by museums, galleries, and other cultural organizations around the world, the collection is now known as "Artstor on JSTOR," signaling the collection's deep integration with the more than 2,800 journals, 100,000 books, 50,000 research reports, and robust primary source collections accessible on JSTOR. In a recent review of Artstor on JSTOR in the ARLIS/NA Multimedia and Technology Review, Chelsea Page, Digital Asset Manager at the Center for Creative Leadership, writes, "The new platform is user friendly and intuitive to learn. Simplifying collections into one central location is a benefit to users who can now search academic, primary, and image resources in one platform. The new platform specifically addresses the needs of research and academic audiences with wider breadth to go beyond the normal scope of database searching. The new Artstor experience on JSTOR remains a resource for anyone interested in exploring art collections across boundaries." We invite members of the library community to learn more about Artstor on JSTOR. Read the press release for additional information. Would anyone have any best practices for writing SSJs or examples of good SSJs they are able to share with me? Or if there are resources that would help with writing good SSJs available that you would point me to, that would be appreciated as well. Thank you so much for your help! These are posted on the campus internal Gateway and can be reviewed at any time. * We tag new 'database' resources on libguides A-Z list (as someone else mentioned) * Faculty who request a new book and indicate they want notification will get an email it's available. * All new print books go on a "this just in" shelf" before rotating into the stacks, faculty do come in to browse those. Nearby is a monitor that rotates images highlighting of newer ebook/e-resource acquistions. * If there is a new or cancelled resource likely to be of interest to a specific academic department, we will ask the liaison librarian to message them. * I think that the most important thing we do is keep detailed internal records of who requested new subscription or major resources that we've added and notes on the reasons for any cancellations. That way if we are ever asked why something is cancelled (and sometimes it's years before anyone notices) we can provide the explanation. Noting the individual who requested something is helpful, as sometimes we're considering cancelling something that only one person wanted, and they may have since retired or the curriculum has changed. (We use Alma, and put these notes on the POLs.) * We keep an internal "wish list" spreadsheet that includes notes on any database or journal ever requested that we did not acquire, and the reasons for the decision. We review it regularly and may add things from that list as availability or cost changes, money becomes available, etc. * We have a lot of aggregated subscription ebook and streaming collections that regularly have removals and additions of lots of individual titles. Time permitting, I will skim removal lists for things that might be concerning, but mostly we don't try to do any communications to faculty about these as it's just not practical. We frequently communicate to faculty that ebook and streaming titles may fluctuate in these packages. Best, Theresa Theresa Arndt Assoc. Has anyone found success in defining and describing a Library Services Platform (LSP) within a Statement of Work (for a procurement)? Including the LSP overall but also its functionality and features (Discovery service, knowledgebase for managing online resources, etc.)? The definitions I've found in articles are a little vague. I understand them, but am having difficulty translating them to an effective Statement of Work which needs to be specific and detailed. I want to make it clear that we want a LSP and not a more traditional ILS (in my experience with researching systems over the last several years, traditional ILS vendors can sometimes be eager to call a traditional system an LSP because they know it's the trend). Higher Education Library Technology (HELibTech) has a useful definition here https://helibtech.com/next_generation. Here is the LSP section: ******************** Library service platforms From around 2010 a new generation of web and cloud based systems emerged. These are termed Library Services Platforms (LSPs). The most widely deployed LSPs are Clarivate/Ex Libris Alma, and OCLC WMS. They were largely developed from the ground up rather than being evolved from past 'legacy' solutions. In functional terms the key differentiation from a LMS/ILS was a fully web based staff interface and *integrated* management of print and electronic resources. This meant libraries did not need a separate electronic resource management (ERM) system or spreadsheets to manage their (predominantly) journal subscriptions and associated licenses. In technology terms LSPs are fully web based and hosted in the cloud. ?A born cloud based system? is essentially a single system with the multiplicity of client libraries being ?tenants.? These ?clouds? may be regional (e.g. European) in order to meet legislative requirements but, within each multi-tenant environment, there is only one copy of the application software, one operating system and one database supporting multiple libraries. The vendor only has to deploy, develop, maintain and upgrade one copy of the software. There is no option for the software to be supported 'on premise' - on local servers. In contrast a hosted LMS/ILS solution is much less efficient. While the hardware infrastructure may be shared the vendor still has to support a multiplicity of client systems that need to be maintained separately. The efficiency benefits to the vendor of what is in effect one single global (or at least multi-national) library system are clear. The open source FOLIO library system is characterized as a LSP, being built from the ground up using modern 'microservices' architecture. However unlike Alma or WMS there may be multiple versions - inherent in a open source approach where code is open to be modified. FOLIO can be deployed as a hosted or on promise solution. Another feature of a LSP it that it comes paired with a ?discovery service? - Primo with Alma WorldCat discovery with WMS). Folio does not have a discovery service but is often paired with the Ebsco Discovery Services (EDS). *********************** You may also find this (2016) paper useful: "Rethinking the library services platform". Description: Join us as we explore the technical and political processes of overhauling and streamlining our LibGuides and the A-Z database list. Through case studies, we will describe how we built on existing relationships, created new workflows, and secured buy-in for what is a total overhaul of the ways Georgia Tech Library employees share their expertise with an online audience. In addition to developing a template, rubric, and style guide for content creators, we created a team to redefine database links, update descriptions, remove extraneous icons, ensure title consistency, and conduct thorough subject association reviews. We will provide insights into the strategic decisions and collaborative efforts that drove this transformation, including cognitive load principles, accessibility standards to optimize the user experience, and emphasizing the use of plain language. In an age of information deluge, our approach demonstrates that less is indeed more, and buy-in from all parts of the library organization is essential. Learning outcomes: By the end of this webinar, the attendees will be able to: - Define best practices for presenting library resources to online users - Identify areas for improvement in their library?s subject guides and database lists - Imagine workflows that successfully function across different units and position types - Discuss the technical and political processes involved in changing fundamental parts of their library?s website Who should attend? Library employees who assist users or work on library systems; anyone who supervises employees who do these things; or library leaders and administrators who want to improve their user experience. Presenter: Marlee Givens (she/her) is Team Lead for Instruction and Scholarly Research at the Georgia Tech Library. She supports teaching, learning and scholarship for faculty and students, and develops and delivers library skills instruction. She served as project manager on the library?s LibGuides Evaluation and Development project and currently leads projects to make library instruction materials more accessible and to streamline the planning, scheduling, and tracking of library workshops. It equates to Integrated Library System (ILS) which is the more common term in the US. As you point out LMS is also (widely) used for Learning Management System which does cause confusion (especially when talking about integration of a reading/Resource list system with a 'LMS'. The UK still often uses the term Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) instead of LMS. In my judgement Library Services Platform (LSP) is a *generally* accepted term (first coined by Marshall Breeding over a decade ago). However librarians and vendors may, and do use LSP when ILS might be more accurate. Some 'legacy' ILSs may have a cloud-based muti-tenant layer which they use to justify the LSP term Although published over a decade ago, the following is still helpful in navigating this area especially in getting to grips with 'multi-tenant' and the different approaches vendors took to develop their library systems. Below is the official message from the professor overseeing the UPEI 2024-25 computer science capstone course. I have done this many times, acting as the "client" almost always with significant success and useful software at the end. If any of you have used my free COUNTER 5.0 usage data harvester, that came from this coursework. All of the projects for me have been open source, and I've never had any pushback about getting the students to formally sign a CC/MIT license. There is almost no demand on your time in the first semester after you submit the proposal, if you wrote it up with sufficient detail. The demand on your time mostly comes in March, as the students get down to the details of the user interface etc. This year they have two options for projects: either a smaller one that is suitable for a team of about 5 students to complete, or a larger one that can be partitioned into subprojects for 3-4 such teams. In both cases, the client will only need to communicate with a team/project lead and in the second semester, also a technical lead. They in turn communicate with the rest of their teams. They are very short of proposals this year, so it is very likely to be worth your time to write up and submit one. If you would like to know more about what it's like from the client side, please contact me off-list and I'd be happy to talk more about my experiences. **? Core Webinar: Trailblazing pathways across the digital divide Date: Tuesday, September 3, 2024 All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.
