Core Webinar: Moving out of one-and-done strategic planning

Date: Wednesday, May 15, 2024

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: Strategic planning is a major undertaking for employees at all
levels of a library; drafting a plan in the midst of remote work due to the
COVID-19 pandemic made that process even more challenging. This webinar
will share the process at a midsized academic library as a new plan was
developed under new library leadership. Bryson’s (2018) Strategy Change
Cycle was used as a model for completing bottom-up strategic planning, with
department break-out activities utilized to avoid telework and Zoom
fatigue. The model utilized includes revisions of mission and vision, so
the presenters will share some strategies used for engaging the library in
crafting their own mission statement. Using Bryson’s model means that the
library has also moved to a more agile model of strategic management,
rather than one-and-done strategic planning.

Learning outcomes:

   -

Participants will be able to define the phases of Bryson’s Strategy
Change Cycle as a strategic planning technique for non-profit institutions.
   -

Participants will be able to identify their institution’s strategic
challenges and how to craft their strategic plan and strategic management
   around those issues.
   -

Participants will be able to plan break-out activities for strategic
management and planning within their own institutions.

Who should attend?

Any non-profit library would benefit from learning about Bryson’s Strategy
Change Cycle and how the steps of this model might work for their
institution’s strategic planning process.

Presenter:

Suzanna Yaukey is the Dean of University Libraries at Towson University’s
Albert S. Cook Library. She leads library initiatives to support student
learning and faculty success, including developing strategic objectives and
visions for a 21st century academic library. Yaukey has a Master of Library
and Information Science from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a
Master of Business Administration from University of East London.
