Best of Core at ALA Annual Conference: Sustainable Reparative Description
and You

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.



Description: Learn how a Cataloger, Archivist, and Metadata Strategist at
an academic library moved from theoretical to practical implementation of a
critical cataloging and reparative description project to address biased
and problematic language. The group has successfully implemented local
changes to multiple Library of Congress subject headings, impacting
thousands of bibliographic records. Attendees will learn benefits and
challenges of local record remediation with limited resources, approaches
to research, project prioritization, decision making, establishing
sustainable workflows, and cross-departmental and community collaboration.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this webinar, the attendees will:

   -

   Pursue administrative support for a critical cataloging and reparative
   description project.
   -

   Plan and prioritize goals of a critical cataloging and reparative
   description project.
   -

   Establish sustainable reparative description workflows and
   documentation.
   -

   Creatively use local systems to remediate description using batch
   processes.
   -

   Engage local communities to inform reparative description.

Presenters:

Marian Matyn has been Archivist in the Clarke Historical Library since
1996. She is an associate professor in the CMU Libraries, an adjunct
professor in and serves as liaison librarian for the CMU History, World
Languages and Cultures dept.

Melissa James is a corporate research librarian for Burns & McDonnell
Engineering Co. Inc. in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the Metadata
Strategist for Central Michigan University Libraries from 2016 to 2023.

Laura Thompson is Music Librarian and Head, Music Library, at Michigan
State University. Previously she was the Catalog and Music Librarian at
Central Michigan University.
