Dear all,

**** apologies for cross-posting ****

Over the last year, the core astronomy journals have moved or are moving towards open access, which is undoubtedly a positive step for accessibility and global reach. While the other main journals have opted for a Gold OA (APC) model, Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) has chosen a different model based on Subscribe to Open (S2O).

S2O, supported by cOAlition S, aims for fairness and equity in achieving immediate open access, without disruption to authors or subscribers. A&A's combination of funding sources, explained below, makes it a cost-effective publishing option for many authors.
HOWEVER: S2O journals are only made open access if the required number of subscriptions are met. This means that the open access status of S2O journals is decided year by year in the first quarter, depending on the level of subscriptions. So, it's vitally important to subscribe to these journals if you want to support open access publishing through S2O.

As of 29 March, it has not yet been decided whether A&A will be published in open access in 2023. The decision has been delayed due to a number of institutions not yet renewing their 2023 subscription. To avoid disruption in the meantime, A&A continues to publish open access until the decision has been made.

If you value A&A's content and wish to support open access, please renew or subscribe promptly<https://www.aanda.org/component/journal_price/>.

Funding and Publishing Model of A&A

  * Funded by: subscriptions, A&A sponsoring countries, and page charges.
  * This combination of income allows for low subscription prices and full open access (contingent on renewals).
  * Editorial costs funded by contributions from A&A sponsoring countries<https://www.aanda.org/about-aa/board-of-directors> and page charges for authors from non-sponsoring countries - paid directly to A&A.
  * Publisher costs funded by subscriptions under the S2O model - collected by the publisher.
  * No page charges for authors from A&A sponsoring countries.
  * Modest page charges (paid directly to A&A) for authors from non-sponsoring countries, considerably lower than APCs in core Gold OA astronomy journals.
  * Automatic page charge waiver for authors of Research4Life Group A countries, and on request for authors who need financial support for publishing.
  * For more information about the A&A S2O model and how it works, we encourage you to visit our FAQ<https://www.aanda.org/subscribe-to-open-faqs> page.

Subscriber benefits

* Guaranteed uninterrupted access for subscribing institutions in case the required number of subscriptions for continued open access publication isn't met.

* NEW: Page charge discount of 10% for authors from non-sponsoring countries at subscribing institutions.

* Forthcoming articles reserved for subscribing institutions.

* "Early bird" subscription rate for prompt renewals.

* A transparency report is published every year, providing a range of financial information of interest t o subscribing libraries.

Thank you for your continued support.

Warm regards,
Charlotte Van Rooyen
