Best of Core at ALA Annual Conference: Programming for Accessibility

Date: Tuesday, August 8, 2023

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: Explore accessibility through the creation of a new, hybrid
early literacy program for expectant parents and parents of newborns,
Mother Goose on the Loose: Hatchlings, designed in conjunction with
Maryland State Library. Learn common accessibility issues, and how they
impact a variety of people who use the library's services from the
librarian who created the program, the graphic artist who designed all of
the printed and online materials, and the section 508 specialist who
advised and curated the website on which the downloadable materials were
located for ALA compliance.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this webinar, the attendees will be able to:

   -

List at least three factors to keep in mind when designing library
programs to ensure that they are promoting diversity.
   -

Explain what the American Disability Act is, including how accessibility
impacts a wide array of users.
   -

List two common accessibility issues and two ways to promote designs (in
print and online) that will ensure content conveyed to all users is
   accessible.
   -

Use a checklist or evaluating designs that all users can perceive,
understand, navigate and interact with, including uses with visual,
auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and neurological disabilities.
   -

Examine their own websites with an eye toward accessibility and
recommend or use resources to ensure the website is fully 508 compliant

Who should attend?

This session should appeal to a wide range of conference attendees.
Children’s librarians will be interested in learning about a new program to
reach populations traditionally underserved by public libraries: expectant
parents and parents with newborns. This, along with the built-in component
of involving community partners to reach non-library users will attract
outreach librarians. Library staff who work with artists or create designs
for the library whether it through newsletters, PR materials,

advertisements, or cable shows, will be interested in hearing what our
designer says. Webmasters or staff working in technical services will be
interested in hearing about the new issues related to ADA compliance. The
technical information provided by Sean will be useful for any library that
produces PDFs or has a website which needs to adhere to ADA compliance
according to federal law .
