Core webinar: A Roadmap for Evidence Based Strategic Planning

Date: Tuesday, February 7, 2023

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.



Description: The purpose of strategic planning is to create a plan for an
organization to move forward. It clarifies the mission and vision, and
names the priorities to inform resource allocation. This webinar is
grounded in the premise that the most valuable strategic plans are rooted
in evidence intentionally gathered by listening to diverse voices across a
library, its institution, and the broader environment. This interactive
session will describe the evidence-based strategic planning process at two
academic libraries, including an overview of tools and strategies. Through
this process, participants will develop the structure to help them
jumpstart the evidence-based strategic planning at their own library.

Learning outcomes:

   -

   Attendees will be able to describe the five steps of evidence-based
   strategic planning.
   -

   Attendees will be able to describe a variety of methods for gathering
   evidence to support a strategic plan.
   -

   Attendees will be able to explain the value of gathering and using
   evidence to inform strategic planning.
   -

   Attendees will identify 1-3 tools that would support evidence-based
   strategic planning in their local environment.

Presenters:

Carissa Tomlinson (she/her)  is the Director of Student Experience,
Learning, and Accessibility at the University of Minnesota Libraries. In
this role she leads a team of staff focused on undergraduate student
outreach, information literacy, research support, and the student
experience. She previously worked at Towson University in Maryland where
she was in a variety of roles related to information literacy, health
sciences, student engagement, and management. When she isn’t working, she
enjoys traveling, pets, and spending time outdoors with her family and
friends.

Catherine Johnson (she/her) is the Associate Library Director for User
Services at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. In her role Catherine
collaborates with library staff and users to ensure the library
organization and space is flexible and responsive so they can do their best
work. Before joining the staff at the Naval Academy, Catherine was the Head
of Information Literacy Initiatives at the University of Baltimore. When
Catherine isn’t collaborating, gathering evidence, or strategic planning
she enjoys hiking, camping, and carving spoons.

Erinn Aspinall (she/her) is the Director of the Health Sciences Libraries
at the University of Minnesota. Her career includes work at public health,
medical, and health sciences libraries, including 15 years at the
University of Minnesota, previous experience at the University of New
Mexico and the University of Michigan, and post-graduate work at the NIH
National Library of Medicine. She believes that libraries are at their best
when they mirror the needs of their communities, and has brought that
vision to her work with strategic planning. Her additional interests
include organizational development, and continuous process improvement.
