Core webinar: To Hold a Cloud: MARC Holdings in the Modern LMS

Date: Tuesday, August 22, 2023

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: Modern Library Management Systems (LMSs) are cloud based.
Holdings information may be the only local metadata for print titles and
becomes critical for extracting bibliographic information by institution.
Yet electronic holdings in LMSs are expressed in knowledge bases. We will
discuss how to apply standards for print and electronic holdings
interoperably. Learners will be given best practices for encoding
accessible records, code to query across standards, and demonstrations of
display resulting from different encoding practices.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this webinar, the attendees will be able to:

   -

   locate the most up to date reference and training material on the MARC
   Format for Holdings (MFHD) standard and related standards for accessible
   display.
   -

   encode accessible holdings records according to a variety of practices
   tuned for cloud-based Library Management Systems (LMSs).
   -

   query across standards for electronic resource and print holdings using
   sample Standard Query Language (SQL) code.
   -

   reflect on whether encoding practices for electronic resources are or
   are not also adequate for print resources at their institution.

Who should attend?

For serials librarians, electronic resources librarians, and anyone who is
curious about why their records for journals and serials display how they
do.

Presenters:

The presenters represent diverse backgrounds in electronic resources
librarianship, serials cataloging, systems and product development,
metadata management and analytics, and bring together highlights of the
Metadata & Collections Section's Continuing Resources Holdings Information
Committee's discussions on the evolution of standards, formats, and best
practices for expressing holdings records.

Emily Fidelman is Head of Metadata Services at West Virginia University.

Cindi Blyberg is Head of Web Technologies and Development at the University
of Kentucky Libraries.

Kirstie Genzel is Electronic Resources and Digital Publishing Librarian at
Cal State.
