The University Libraries at Virginia Tech seek a collaborative,
resourceful, and dynamic professional to serve as the Assistant Director of
Continuing and Electronic Resources. Continuing and Electronic Resources
reports to the Director of the Jean Russell Quible Department Collections
and Technical Services. The assistant director provides leadership for the
procurement, assessment, and management of continuing resources in both
print and electronic formats, including individual and package journal
subscriptions, databases, streaming services, and the management of
data-driven acquisition models. The incumbent also oversees print and
electronic monographic acquisitions across a variety of platforms. The
incumbent provides guidance and support in the management of the electronic
resources lifecycle (trials, acquisitions, license review, knowledge base
management, troubleshooting, authentication and cancellations). The
assistant director exercises vision, sets goals, and guides the work of
full time and part-time staff. The incumbent works closely with all members
of a departmental collection management team to develop a unified strategy,
best practices, and workflows for managing fee-based and open access
scholarly resources that incorporate key stakeholders. The acquisition of
physical collections and electronic resources is achieved across three
units, acquisitions, serials, and interlibrary loan, who work in close
collaboration to provide seamless access. The assistant director also
oversees the library management system implementation and web-scale
discovery services.

Responsibilities:

   - Manages the life cycle of continuing electronic resources (trials,
   acquisition, license review, knowledge base management, authentication
   protocols, renewals, and cancellations).
   - Sets goals, assesses the performance of the unit, provides training,
   coaching, and improvement plans.
   - Initiates improvements to the design and delivery of electronic
   resources and integrates new features to provide optimal access.
   - Collects and analyzes electronic resources holdings and usage
   statistics for annual reporting and collection management decisions.
   - Leads the development and implementation of local workflows and
   documentation to support the acquisition and management of electronic
   resources and print serials.
   - Works collaboratively with department staff to provide training and
   support in the management of all areas of the electronic resources
   lifecycle.
   - Monitors trends and best practices related to scholarly publishing,
   electronic resource access, discoverability, data harvesting, usage
   analysis, and preservation to enhance library services.
   - Works collaboratively with the Metadata Services Team to ensure the
   accuracy of MARC records, the discovery index, knowledge bases, and link
   resolver holdings.
   - Works collaboratively with stakeholders to effectively integrate
   electronic resource tools and services into the larger discovery and
   delivery ecosystem.
   - Reviews and negotiates license agreements to reach favorable terms,
   including complex negotiations for data sets, APIs, transformative
   agreements, and other emerging library resources.
   - Provides support for inquiries related to interpretation of license
   terms.
   - Establishes and maintains excellent publisher and vendor relationships.

*Required Qualifications:*
- ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or
equivalent
- Experience in a leadership or high-level supervisory position in a
library acquisitions or electronic resources management unit
- Experience with electronic resources licensing and acquisitions processes
- Ability to work creatively and effectively both individually and
collaboratively
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to
diversity and staff development

*Preferred Qualifications:*
- Foundational understanding of discovery services and platforms and their
relationship to acquisitions, resource sharing, and/or electronic resources
management
- Experience managing interlibrary loan services
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to and effectively implement changes in the
work environment
- Evidence of ability to work independently and meeting deadlines
- Experience reviewing and negotiating license agreements, purchasing
terms, and/or vendor services for electronic resources
- Strong customer/patron focus and a commitment to service and outreach in
an academic community
- Experience with Koha ILS, CORAL ERM, OCLC WorldCat Discovery Service
