Cataloging and Metadata Librarian
The J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Cataloging and Metadata Librarian position at the rank of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian beginning July 2022 or sooner. We seek a colleague who will provide leadership in the development, evaluation, and implementation of cataloging and metadata policies, standards, procedures, and workflows, in coordination with a Head of Collection Management Services & Scholarly Communication. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment to prioritizing access to a diverse user population, especially for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and first-generation students.
Responsibilities:
The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will perform original cataloging and complex metadata creation in multiple languages, formats, and time periods. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will lead planning, evaluation, and implementation of metadata and cataloging policies, standards, procedures, and workflows, as well as representing the library in implementing CSU-wide consortial level cataloging policies and procedures such as those related to the shared Ex Libris Alma/Primo Unified Library Management System (ULMS)<https://ulms.calstate.edu/>. The person in this position will provide lead work to the Cataloging unit and will work closely with the faculty and staff in the Collection Management Services & Scholarly Communication and Special Collections & Archives divisions.
In addition, library faculty members are expected to develop an active ongoing scholarship program or program of creative work in one’s area of specialty, and maintain ongoing committee and service assignments.
Qualifications
Required:
* ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
* Minimum of one year of applied cataloging/metadata experience
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse population of colleagues and library stakeholders
Preferred:
* Demonstrated working knowledge of RDA, AACR2, DCRM(b), LCCS, LCSH, and MARC formats and standards
* Experience cataloging using the OCLC bibliographic utility
* Experience using a library services platform, preferably Ex Libris’ Alma
* Demonstrated experience cataloging special collections materials, including rare books and serials, ephemera, audiovisual materials, music, organizational records, and manuscripts, in multiple languages, formats, and time periods
* Current awareness of new trends and emerging technologies in cataloging and technical services, including critical perspectives on current and past cataloging and metadata practices
* Excellent analytical and pro-active problem solving, organizational, and project management skills
* Ability to work independently and as a member or leader of a team
* Ability to adapt to rapid change and to exercise creativity and initiative
* Active involvement in professional development activities
