Best of Core Forum webinar: Decentering Ourselves, Empowering Others

Date: Wednesday, January 18, 2023

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.



Description: We imagine that there is a “secret sauce” to leading
committees or projects within our libraries. This presentation posits that
an effective leader decenters themselves in order to empower those being
led. In doing so, offers a simple leadership philosophy: find people who
want to do cool things, empower them to do those things, and give people
credit for the cool things they’ve done. Using the development of a
diversity plan at the presenter’s library as an example of the enactment of
this philosophy, the presenter will talk about the challenges and
opportunities involved in decentering yourself as a leader.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to describe the
decentering leadership strategy described by the presenter. Participants
will also be able to develop a plan for adapting this strategy to their own
projects and committees.

Who should attend?

While this webinar is applicable to all who have leadership and management
responsibilities, it is directed toward those who lead groups or committees
of people they do not supervise.

Erin Leach is the Head of Administrative Projects and Organizational
Effectiveness at University of Georgia Libraries.
