In case it helps, the Licensing Privacy project white paper on Electronic Resource Authentication and Authorization by Sunshine Carter and Cody Hanson that was published in 2022 provides an overview of this landscape and the role of IP authentication (https://publish.illinois.edu/licensingprivacy/authentication/). On that website, you'll also see a link to a recording of a webinar given by Cody and Sunshine. Lisa

Hi Sarah,

Yes this is the most common way to authenticate. I feel Single Sign On will be the future but for now this is the preferred method. There are no user credentials involved unless remotely through a proxy server, and those usernames/passwords would have to be issued by your organization anyway.

The only issues may be if your organization is using cloud based firewalls that might use IP ranges from data centers in another area so it might be tricky as to what IP address to provide.

Thanks,

If you use IP authentication, there’s literally no way around it. The vendor has to have it to authenticate your users. I’ve never heard of not giving the IP range before due to security. You can look up online where IP ranges are

If anything, you’re not providing patron data, so it’s safer.

There’s the IP registry, where you give them your IP range and the vendors contact them. It’s free for libraries (for now) but vendors pay to have access and some vendors say they’ll only use it and they don’t want libraries emailing them a bunch with IP updates.

I was wondering if anyone else’s IT department is apprehensive about giving out IP addresses to vendors. Ours says it is a security concern, but it is required for us to subscribe to certain platforms. Any advice?
