[Eril-l] OverDrive Authentication

Hello Jennifer,

We went through the same choice with OverDrive, and decided on their username/password management solution (ULM) specifically to support mobile devices.

We like using SSO when possible, but in this case it wasn’t the most flexible choice for our users. SSO would have supported mobile reading on Kindle devices (which have their own authentication path), but not on the Libby app because mobile devices cannot be attached to our network. We don’t use EZProxy, so I can’t speculate about that. If your users can authenticate their phone or tablet to your network using EZProxy, then the SSO solution might work. It’s hard to know for sure until you test it so you might try this implementation, and if it doesn’t work then switch to another. That’s what we did, and the OverDrive staff was helpful in switching us to something that worked better. Best of luck!

Brian

We are beginning to implement OverDrive and need to select our authentication method. We are considering either EZproxy or SSO. What are the pros and cons of each? We don’t have OpenAthens, but our IT department has set up direct SSO with other vendors before. We do want to direct users to the mobile app. Would EZproxy authentication be compatible with that?
