Core webinar: All Things to All People: Navigating Middle Management
Date: Wednesday, September 15, 2021
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.
Description: Many people in libraries hold middle management positions, and
it can be a tough spot to be in. Often they are a go-between bridging
administration and library staff who complete the daily work that keeps the
library running. Middle managers are pulled between day-to-day operations
and administrative responsibilities, not situated clearly in one space or
the other. They need to support those who report to them, often fielding
their complaints, concerns, and emotions, but may be limited in the amount
of power they actually have to address those concerns or affect change.
This is a position for which many librarians are not adequately trained or
prepared, and once in a middle management position the amount of support
they receive can vary widely. In this webinar, I will discuss some of the
major challenges associated with this role, as well as the opportunities,
and strategies for improving communication, employing emotional agility,
maintaining job satisfaction, and avoiding burnout.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of this webinar, attendees will:
-
Articulate the unique challenges faced by library middle managers
-
Understand the concept of emotional agility and how to employ it from
the middle
-
Take practical steps to maintain job satisfaction and avoid burnout in a
middle management role
Who should attend?
The primary audience for this webinar is people in middle management
positions in libraries who are confronting challenges with this position
and seeking strategies to improve communication, operate efficiently within
hierarchies, and prevent burnout.
Presenter:
Amanda Scull is the Head of Education and Information Services at Dartmouth
College Biomedical Libraries. She received her MLIS from Syracuse
University in 2012, and has held a variety of library positions before her
current managerial position at Dartmouth. Amanda has published and
presented frequently on collection management, instruction, and staff
development.
