Core webinar: Using Diversity Awards to Assess eBook Collections

Date: Wednesday, August 25, 2021

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: This webinar will discuss an ebook collection diversity
assessment project undertaken at St. John’s University Library. The project
was based on one undertaken by Laurel Kristick at the University of Oregon
Library, which used a bibliography of books that received awards from
organizations representing different groups of people, including

• African Americans

• Arab Americans

• Asian Americans

• People with Disabilities

• Latinx

• LBGTQ+

• Native Americans

• Women

Librarians at St. John’s University modified the study to include only
ebooks, and rather than comparing only to peer institution libraries, also
included aspirational institution libraries. This webinar will explain how
St. John’s University libraries undertook the ebook assessment and what it
learned from the process.

Much of the Webinar will be delivered through slides, which will explain:

• The origins of the eBook collection diversity assessment project at St.
John’s.

• How we carried out the project.

• What we learned from the project.

Other resources that will be discussed include:

• Zotero, as a means of creating and managing a bibliography.

• Worldcat, for obtaining bibliographic information.

• Gobi, for verifying the availability of titles as ebooks for library
purchase.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to

• Use a bibliography of diversity titles to compare a collection with peer
institution libraries

• Identify peer libraries

• Modify the bibliography based on institutional needs and format, such as
print or ebook

Who should attend?

Although the ebook collection diversity assessment was conducted at an
academic library, the study could easily be modified for a public library.
The primary audience for this webinar is therefore academic and public
librarians who manage collections.

Presenter:

Ben Turner (he/him/his) is Program Coordinator of Library Assessment and
Inclusive Practices at St. John's University Libraries. Publications
