ALCTS webinar: Acquisitions Work: From Competencies to Competence

Date: Wednesday, September 25, 2019

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 AM Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 PM Central, and 2 PM Eastern time.

Description: In the Core Competencies for Acquisitions Professionals
approved by the ALCTS Board of Directors in 2018, it is noted that “Lack of
training opportunities is a significant challenge in the field, with many
acquisitions professionals learning locally developed practices on the job
and through continuing education offerings by professional associations.”
This webinar is meant to address that challenge with a straightforward
introduction that connects competencies, practice, and practitioners.

Beginning by connecting Core Competencies to position descriptions and to
individual position duties, presenters and attendees will develop training
plans that are attentive to the needs of new hires. We will discuss the
needs and preferences of trainees, paying attention to modes of delivery
and how best to address affective aspects of professional development that
are not as simple as “skills-development”. We will also specifically
address the training and documentation responsibilities that organizations
and supervisors have to the new workers in their organizations.

We will conclude with a meditation on how creating individualized holistic
and humane training programs can address the community-wide lack of
training opportunities, and a call to action to identify and create those
training opportunities.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to

   1.

Connect ALCTS Core Competencies for Acquisitions Professionals to
   individual acquisitions positions
   2.

Identify the obligations of their organization to incoming staff members
   3.

Understand the importance of training using various modes of delivery,
and the importance of addressing affective aspects of professional
   development
   4.

opportunities, and identify training opportunities that need to be
   developed for the community.
