ALCTS e-Forum: Streaming Media Collections

Pacific: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Mountain: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Central: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Eastern: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Large-scale streaming video platforms are making more video content
directly available to our users than ever before. How do librarians plan
for and navigate issues of funding and access in a seemingly ever-expanding
sea of offerings? Topics include: strategies for using mediated mode to
improve collection development, funding models, budget management, managing
user expectations, implications for immediate and long-term access, the
effect of large-scale streaming collections on independent distributors,
and opportunities for collaboration. Join this e-Forum to share insights
and learn from national colleagues as the hosts facilitate a discussion
while sharing their own experiences and perspectives.

Moderators

Gisele Tanasse is the Film & Media Services Librarian at the University of
California, Berkeley Library. She is the Chair-Elect of the American
Library Association's Film & Media Round Table and chaired the 2018
revisions to the ACRL Guidelines for Media Resources in Academic Libraries.
She administers the popular VideoLib and VideoNews Listservs and serves on
the Executive Board for the National Media Market's Academic Libraries
Video Trust and the steering committee for the refreshed website for the
canonical documentary RACE: The Power of an Illusion.

Lisa Hooper is the Head Music & Media Librarian for the Howard-Tilton
Memorial Library. Lisa has a background in music performance, musicology,
and music librarianship before falling into collecting and managing
audiovisual collections for all areas of study of the Tulane University
community. She is active in the Music Library Association and an avid
follower of the work of NMM (National Media Market) and a follower and
occasional particant in the work of ALA’s Film and Media Round Table (FMRT).

Michele McKenzie is the Media Librarian for City College of San Francisco’s
Library and Learning Resources. Michele received her Bachelor of Science in
Film and Anthropology from City University of New York and her Master of
Library and Information Science with a focus in Archival Studies from San
Jose State University. Michele has extensive experience managing
audiovisual collections for a range of archives and libraries. She is a
former American Library Association Spectrum Initiative Scholar and past
Chair of Video Round Table (now Film and Media Round Table). Michele
currently serves on the ALA FMRT Notable Videos for Adults Awards
Committee.

What Is an e-Forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters
of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The
e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email
address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate
with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two
to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.
