ALCTS webinar: Digital Preservation: Audiovisual Edition, Part 1
Date: Wednesday, February 27, 2019
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 AM Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 PM Central, and 2 PM Eastern time.
This is part 1 of a two-part series. Digital Preservation: Audiovisual
Edition, Part 2
<http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/0306192> is the
companion to this webinar.
“Digital Preservation: Audiovisual Edition” is a two-part series dedicated
to the discussion of audio and video materials in a digital preservation
context. From analog media digitally reformatted to born-digital
audiovisual materials, this webinar series will cover the basics of
understanding audiovisual media and how to consider these materials when
engaged in preservation and access at your library or archive.
Description: Part 1 of "Digital Preservation: Audiovisual Edition" is
dedicated to the "nuts and bolts" of digital AV files -- their technical
characteristics and attendant considerations for preservation/access.
Digital file carriers will be discussed as well as the digitization of
analog AV materials. This latter topic will be discussed in the context of
considerations made when files are prepared for digital preservation.
Learning outcomes: Participants will come out of this webinar having
learned characteristics of digital audiovisual materials, how methods of
generating digital audiovisual materials influence archiving, and
considerations that must be made when selecting file formats in a
preservation/access context when reformatting analog media.
Who should attend?
Primary audience will be library staff and professionals who are involved
in the digital preservation and access of audiovisual materials. The
webinar will be structured with a lesson-plan that will give a novice the
vocabulary and knowledge to understand larger concepts and technical
aspects of digital preservation of audiovisual materials. Therefore,
audience levels can range from novice to advanced.
Presenter:
Stefan Elnabli is UC San Diego Library's Media Curation Librarian and
Manager of Digital Reformatting Operations, providing strategic direction
in the Library's management, preservation, and access of moving image
collections both analog and digital. Elnabli's engagement with visual
culture and digital repository development spans the areas of cinema
studies, archival preservation, and repository service management. He is
currently an instructor for the Association of Research Libraries' Digital
Scholarship Institute and his past appointments include positions with AVP
Information Management Solutions, the Samvera application team for Avalon
Media System, WNET Channel 13 Digital Archive, and preservation units
within major university libraries including Stanford University, New York
University, and Northwestern University.
