ALCTS webinar: Using LCSH Pattern Headings

Date: Wednesday, September 18, 2019

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 AM Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 PM Central, and 2 PM Eastern time.

Description: The webinar will instruct users how to locate the freely
available Subject Headings Manual and the various worksheets that are
applicable to using the Pattern Headings. Additionally, the webinar will
show how to locate pattern headings using the freely-available LCSH PDF
files and how a parallel search in the subscription-based ClassificationWeb
can provide a similar result.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the webinar, the attendees should be able to:

• Understand the LCSH Pattern Headings

• Understand the difference between editorial and free-floating subdivisions

• Apply free-floating subdivisions using the tools in the Subject Headings
Manual (SHM)

Who should attend?

Catalogers and metadata librarians using LCSH.

Presenter:

Bobby Bothmann is professor and metadata & emerging technologies librarian
in Library Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Bobby catalogs
monographic resources and investigates new technologies. He holds an MLIS
from the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee and an MS in Geography and
English Technical Communication from MSU Mankato. Bobby teaches cataloging
for the iSchool at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
