We've also seen a huge increase in our spending for Kanopy. A big issue for us, as Theresa mentioned, was that we already had access to many of the titles being triggered (AVON, DVDs, etc,). At times, it caused us to be charged anywhere from $1500-$2500 a month for duplicated titles. We reached out to Kanopy to see if something could be done to address this and they have a de-duplication policy that we were unaware of - if you claim any titles that you have elsewhere with a screenshot or permalink from your catalog within two weeks of your invoice, they will verify and then refund the cost of that film. It made a big difference for us on our monthly invoices and allowed us to keep PDA going about a month longer than we would have been able to otherwise based on our planned budget. We switched to the mediated model on Oct. 1st and so far faculty/students have been very understanding and Kanopy has been extremely fast in providing access to titles as we purchase them. One complaint we have gotten several times from faculty since starting the mediation model is that they got used to being able to preview titles in the PDA model before using it in their class. There are no previews with mediation and they want to be able to preview a film to make sure it would work for their class before we purchase it. It would be nice if this was something that Kanopy could address.

Ditto for us - dramatic increase in costs, and we're a small liberal arts college without a film studies major.  Based on titles triggered, I think much of the use is curricular or related to college programs, but I'm pretty sure some is personal/recreational, which we unfortunately cannot afford to support.   I was most recently alarmed by triggers over the summer for each episode of Ken Burns' Civil War series - Kanopy charged a separate license fee for each one-hour episode!  And we have access to that same content 3 other ways already that would have had no additional cost to the library.   Checking a sample of around 100 of our Kanopy triggers showed around 25% overlap with our fixed-cost subscription access options.

I recently had a long conversation with a Kanopy rep, and (doing her job) she tried to convince me this wasn't really a problem and to just shift money from other resources, since Kanopy is what our users obviously want.  Following that conversation, the Kanopy folks sent me some detailed use data and said that we could "curate" our access, which means changing some producers to mediated access, while leaving others open for PDA.  For example, we might leave the Criterion Collection films (Kanopy has about 60% of those) running on PDA, but require mediation for PBS content.   I haven't made adjustments yet, as I need to find time to examine the data more carefully.   We've hesitated to go the all-mediated route, but I'm appreciative of those who've shared their experience with that approach.

In the meantime, we started communicating with our faculty about how the Kanopy funding model works, and asking them to please check our flat-rate subscription streaming packages first (AVON, Films on Demand), or ask a librarian for help finding the most cost-effective access.   We also put notes to this effect on our database listings and libguides.   We've gotten positive feedback from faculty who say they will be mindful of this to help to contain costs.

Our use of Kanopy and streaming video has also gone up significantly, as faculty from all disciplines are using it for teaching purposes.  We don't think the services are being misused, but it's definitely having am impact on our already lean budget.  We haven't put any limits on use yet and will hold off as long as we can.

Hi,
I'm wondering if there are any libraries that have reached out to other departments on their campus about providing institutional streaming for students?

I ask this in relation to Kanopy since we have seen a dramatic increase in Kanopy usage. While we're happy that folks are using this resource, there's also the question of whether or not the library is the clear choice to be paying for this. I'm only aware of Swank and HBO Go that provide campus streaming.

My thinking is that the library could still license films for classroom use but maybe "entertainment" streaming could be paid for by student life or something similar.

Do others have thoughts about this?
