[Eril-l] criteria for e-resources on A-Z databases list

Mainly it is due to lack of consensus and shared understanding among subject librarians. Whenever the topic of revising what gets on our Databases A-Z list comes up, the discussion tends to go in a lot of different directions. Since one particular organizational group (not the subject librarians group) maintains the list, there isn’t a broad awareness among others of what that work entails. There are times, to be quite honest, when I’ve seriously considered just making the change under the principle of better to ask for forgiveness than permission, and I’m not sure it’d even be noticed.

What have been the barriers to a successful revision?

Here is our criteria. I wrote it based on another library’s criteria and after 3-4 years of using it, I don’t like it, mainly because it’s too inclusive and therefore harder to maintain over time. Efforts to revise the definition to be more selective have not yet been successful.

DEFINITION:
Databases, abstracting and indexing resources, online reference works, journal and e-book packages, and freely available websites that are selected by subject librarians as having value for one or more subject areas.

What policies or criteria do you use to decide if an electronic resource belongs on your A-Z Databases page?
