ALCTS e-Forum: Cataloging and Metadata Education
March 20-21, 2018
Moderated by Christopher Dieckman, Erin Elzi, and Janelle Zetty
Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone!
Registration information is at the end of the message.
Each day, discussion begins and ends at:
Pacific: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Mountain: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Central: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Eastern: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
To maintain relevance in a rapidly evolving and increasingly complex
information landscape, cataloging and metadata specialists must continually
reassess formal L.I.S. education and its relationship to their work. This
e-forum intends to address the current state of postgraduate education in
cataloging and metadata and its efficacy in preparing students for
professional practice. Topics may include, but are not limited to, how
cataloging and metadata is covered in library science courses, whether this
information is applicable with current demands, and what we can do to
change or contribute to it.
Moderators
Christopher Dieckman is a Metadata & Cataloging Librarian at Iowa State
University. In addition to other projects, he oversees the copy cataloging
of serials and media as well as performs original cataloging on a variety
of format types. He earned his M.L.I.S. from Kent State University in 2013.
Erin Elzi is the Design and Discovery Librarian at the University of
Denver. Prior to this, she held the position of Cataloging and Metadata
Librarian at DU, and Technical Services Librarian at the Bard Graduate
Center. She also teaches Metadata Architectures in DU's LIS program.
Janelle Zetty is the Head of Cataloging at the University of Louisiana at
Lafayette. She is the departmental librarian for the College of Engineering
and an indexer for the Bayou State Periodicals Index. She has previous
experience cataloging in a public library.
What Is an e-Forum?
An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters
of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The
e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email
address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate
with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two
to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.

How to Register
You must register your email address to subscribe to or access an
electronic discussion list on ALA's Mailing List Service. Once you have
registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you
