[Eril-l] Kanopy Streaming Videos - PDA program

I find it interesting that the discussion is focused on how to reduce
patron use of a resource, rather than increase it. I get it - we don't have
funds for the pay-per-use model indefinitely, but at my library, where use
of just about all resources is significantly down, having a sudden increase
sounds like a "good problem" to have. Rather than finding ways to obstruct
patron use, maybe the better approach would be to find a way to accommodate
it. Cut something else? perhaps something sacrosanct that we librarians
don't want to let go of, but that our patrons no longer care about  - if
such a thing still exists at your library, maybe not. Or use the demand as
proof that your library needs additional support? Or renegotiate with the
vendor? At the very least, getting the vendor to work with you to set
appropriate use parameters.

I also think "entertainment" use of library resources is worth thinking
about in depth. I think of my library's mission broadly; we are there not
only to support academics, but to help provide the entire higher ed
experience for students. So if a student club is watching a film, the
library supporting that use seems like good policy. In provision of that
film, we enrich the education students are getting outside of classes,
which is a critical part of learning. We have purchased films for outdoor
rec, environmental student groups, and LGBT groups, all outside of
faculty/class demands. I would defend all of those as providing an
essential library service.
