ALCTS e-Forum: Life-cycle Management of Digital Assets

April 18-19, 2017

Moderated by Ian Bogus and Roger Smith

Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone!

Registration information is at the end of the message.

Each day, discussion begins and ends at:

Pacific: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Mountain: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Central: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Eastern: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Preserving digital assets has become a part of everyday activities at
libraries big and small, but for many it is an intimidating concept. While
the tools and language may be different, the basic theories and
philosophies are the same as what libraries have been doing for paper,
parchment, magnetic media, and plastics. Beginning with assessment, we will
consider digitization, description, management and preservation standards
and best practices. This is an opportunity to see what how other
institutions are achieving their goals as well as ask the questions that
you were always too afraid to ask.

Moderators

Ian Bogus is the MacDonald Curator of Preservation at the University of
Pennsylvania where he launched the Libraries’ first system-wide
preservation and conservation program. He is provides leadership for the
life-cycle management of physical and digital collections. Penn Libraries’
nascent digital repository is built on a Fedora/Hydra framework.

Roger Smith is the Director of the Digital Library Development Program
(DLDP), developing procedures and workflow for library digital collections.
UC San Diego Library Digital Collections are preserved in Chronopolis, a
TRAC certified preservation environment. UC San Diego Library and
Chronopolis are participants in the Digital Preservation Network (DPN)
initiative.

What Is an e-Forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters
of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The
e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email
address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate
with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two
to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.

For information about upcoming e-forums, please visit

How to Register

You must register your email address to subscribe to or access an
electronic discussion list on ALA's Mailing List Service. Once you have
registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you
choose to leave the list. Find instructions for subscribing and
unsubscribing online. (
