SOCIAL SCIENCES COORDINATOR

DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The University of Kentucky Libraries seeks a creative, collaborative, and entrepreneurial library professional with an ability to provide innovative services through the position of Social Sciences Coordinator.  The successful candidate will lead and collaborate with a team of academic liaisons with subject expertise in the social sciences to support current and emerging research strategies and methods of scholarly production.  The Coordinator will oversee the ongoing management of social sciences collections and promote UK Libraries' commitment to the creation and dissemination of scholarship.

Reporting to the Director of Collections, the Coordinator will provide subject-specific leadership for collection building and management, as well as promote library collections, programs, and services.  As an academic liaison, the Coordinator will teach and assess curriculum-integrated instructional sessions and conduct in-depth research consultations in assigned subject areas appropriate to their background and expertise.  The Coordinator will develop and maintain online research and course guides and have an awareness of current research tools and technology.  Active engagement with faculty and students in all assigned subject areas and duties will be essential.

The Coordinator will provide research and scholarly publishing support in assigned subject areas, participate in leadership of research data management initiatives, and serve as a source of statistical data support and expertise for the campus community.  Responsibilities will include working collaboratively with colleagues throughout UK Libraries and the campus to advance UKnowledge, the university's institutional repository, and the development, implementation, and assessment of research support services in the social sciences.  The Coordinator will participate in outreach and campus engagement activities that build partnerships and cultivate relationships with key university units.

The Coordinator will participate in shared governance of the University of Kentucky by serving on library, departmental/college, and university committees as appropriate. The position will pursue professional development and service activities in order to meet the library requirements for tenure and promotion.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


*         ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Science

*         Course work or experience in the social sciences or related field

*         Minimum of two years of experience in an academic/research library

*         Demonstrated understanding of current issues and trends in scholarly communication

*         Demonstrated understanding of research data lifecycle and current issues in data management

*         Strong public service orientation

*         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well with a diverse population of faculty, students, and colleagues

*         Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track position through research, publication, and/or professional engagement

Preference will be given to candidates with:


*         Advanced degree in a social sciences discipline

*         Experience in providing information literacy instruction and research consultations in an academic/research library

*         Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends that affect academic libraries and higher education

*         Demonstrated experience with statistical software and social science research methods, as well as understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Position is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position.

Combined library holdings total more than four million volumes. The system has a faculty of 60 and a support and professional staff of 108. UK Libraries currently uses the Voyager integrated library system and anticipates a migration to the Alma system in the near future. UK Libraries memberships include the Association of Research Libraries, LYRASIS, ASERL, and the Center for Research Libraries. UK is a regional depository for government publications.
