Holdings Information Forum: Knowledge Base Strategies, Jan. 9, 3-4 pm, BCEC 156C

Ensuring the accuracy of holdings information in a library's knowledge base is a constant struggle. The Holdings Information Committee of the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section hopes to provide some solutions to this vexing problem at its Holdings Information Forum at ALA Midwinter.
The Forum will have two presentations on different approaches to the problem. Steve Shadle, Serials Access Librarian at the University of Washington, and Regina Reynolds, Director, U.S. ISSN Center at the Library of Congress, will speak on PIE-J (Presentation & Identification of E-Journals), a NISO Recommended Practice that provides guidance to e-journal publishers and providers. The presentation will provide an overview of PIE-J guidelines that relate to holdings and coverage data, specifically the area on how to deal with title changes and title histories so as to avoid bad coverage data that negatively affects discovery and access. It will also include examples and provide methods that libraries can use to report holdings problems to publishers and providers.
Shannon Regan, Acquisitions Coordinator of E-resources and Serials at New York Public Library, will present on handling the dilemma of the quick fix versus the time-consuming precise fix in verifying holdings information. NYPL has one of the largest circulating public branch library collections in the United States, and is also a major research library. The presentation will discuss how the library uses collaborative efforts of the collection development, selection, cataloging, and acquisitions areas to maintain accurate holdings information and prioritize backlogged projects while maintaining the day to day responsibilities of acquisitions.
Come join us on Saturday, January 9, from 3-4 pm at the Boston Convention and Exposition Center, room 156C, to hear these presentations and get some useful tips.

We look forward to seeing you there.
